To Sharon and the List,
Thank you for Tom Lamb's website. More and more I am
hearing of people opting out of attending Church and find
myself in that number. I am anything but happy about the
situation and keep looking for a simple, Truth teaching Church. We thought we had found one a year ago and we
loved going there, for a time. Then we discovered the rules
of membership, ladies not to wear slacks even up a ladder
painting the trim on the house or doing gardening or camping. Our Baptism by immersion occuring 20yrs prior
was not accepted and we had to be redone into that Church.
We were considered hypocrites if we owned a television.
Needless to say, we stopped going there, but it did break our
hearts for a time. Anything else in our area is either heavy Charismatic or extremely liberal. We haven't given up yet and are now looking at other towns that surround us. I miss
having Communion with the Saints so much. Anyone else
in the same posistion? May God Bless You - Sunday

Yes my wife and myself were saved in a little church on Big Pine Key Fl.
about 25 years ago , we have seen just about every kind of deception you
can think of .I was a teacher and a minister, but the more I studied the
more what the churches were teaching was confusion. what Jesus taught
and what Paul taught was sometimes in conflict .then I started reading
the works of the 19th century theologian E.W.Bullinger. He is long been
dead but others have carried on with His teaching . His teaching is
logical and spiritual. there is a web site called " truth for today ".
The confusion is gone, and we am doing very well without all the garbage
that is in the church ( so called . )

Subject: [bprlist] S.F. start-up to unveil disposable cell phone
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>

S.F. start-up to unveil disposable cell phone
BY JOSHUA L. KWAN
Mercury News
The newest cell phone on the block doesn't look anything like its fancy,
feature-filled cousins: It doesn't have a keypad, lacks a display screen and
uses a disposable battery. And someday it might be sold in vending
machines and at gas stations for about $30.
Telespree, a start-up in San Francisco, plans to unveil today one of the
world's first disposable wireless phones. Its vision to make cell phones and
prepaid service plans as easy to buy as disposable cameras may open up a
new market for wireless carriers. It also could bring wireless phone service to
young, old and low-income people -- groups that might not otherwise buy a
full-featured wireless phone and service plan, analysts said.
Telespree still has a long way to go before it reaches the ubiquity of
disposable cameras. The first hurdle is convincing a carrier that its
technology works well enough. Then it has to sign distribution deals with
nationwide retailers like Wal-Mart, gas stations like Chevron and
convenience stores like 7-Eleven.
What gives Telespree's phone a shot is the low cost and simplicity, the
company said. Telespree's phone has just two buttons: one to turn the
device ``on'' and the other for placing emergency calls. To dial, speak a
phone number. The phone has two major pieces. Consumers keep the
colorful segment that forms the earpiece and microphone. The ``AirClip''
portion holds a battery and keeps track of how many minutes are left. When
the minutes run out, consumers can unsnap the AirClip, throw it away and
buy a new one.
Telespree aims to sell its technology -- the handsets and network software --
to carriers such as AT&T, Cingular Wireless and VoiceStream, carriers that
use the Global System for Mobile communications standard, or GSM.
Essentially, all the intelligence of the phone would reside in Telespree's
network -- which includes speech recognition technology from Nuance
Communications -- rather than costly components inside the cell phone.
``Where everyone is adding more features on phones, Telespree is making it
simpler and easier to use. They're unique in going in the opposite direction,''
said analyst Charul Vyas of International Data Corp.
Another low-cost disposable phone on the horizon comes from Randice-Lisa
Altschul, a New Jersey woman who hired engineers to develop a cell phone
that's made largely of paper.
The first model from Telespree only makes outgoing calls. Versions that can
receive incoming calls may arrive within the year, said CEO Alon Segal.
Features like an address book and voicemail are also in the works and can
be written into Telespree software; consumers wouldn't have to buy an
expensive gadget upgrade.
Most people who want and can afford cell phones have already signed long-
term contracts with carriers. Now, the challenge is to make service plans
attractive enough and cell phones cheap enough to reach those who don't
want to commit to a long-term deal and a pricey phone, analysts said.
``Buying a cell phone should be no different from buying a book or
magazine,'' said Eddie Hold of Current Analysis, a research firm in Virginia.
``It needs to be a convenient purchase.''
Nearly all wireless subscribers in the U.S. pay a monthly fee for a set
number of minutes. Carriers spend roughly $150 in cell phone subsidies for
each new subscriber, according to Current Analysis. To recover that
investment, carriers lock in the customer to long-term service agreements.
And to protect that investment, carriers run credit checks on potential
subscribers.
Those who fail the credit check are shuffled into prepaid plans, which are
typically much more expensive on a per-minute basis than monthly plans.
Carriers have long treated prepaid customers as second-class because they
tend to jump from one company to the next and don't commit to buying a
regular amount of minutes.
Disposable phones like Telespree's can turn a fickle and ephemeral
customer base into a potentially profitable group for carriers, analysts said..
Bryan Prohm of Gartner Dataquest said that the youth market is perfect for
prepaid plans. Parents can control how many minutes to give to kids, and
the kids don't have to worry about losing an expensive device.
Seniors are another group who might benefit. They can keep a phone for
safety without adding to their monthly expenses.
Carriers are exploring ways to make prepaid service more attractive to
consumers. AT&T introduced a new prepaid program in November, but the
cost of the cheapest package, including cell phone and $25 worth of
minutes, still hit $100.
``Prepaid is now just another option for payment,'' said AT&T Wireless
Services spokeswoman Danielle Perry. ``It doesn't have the stigma it used
to.''

PUBLIC SECURITY MINISTER FAVORS OPENING TEMPLE MOUNT TO
JEWS
Public Security Minister Uzi Landau plans to reopen the Temple Mount to
Jewish visitors - although he said that the government must approve the
decision. Landau said this morning that if the police and Waqf allow
everyone else to enter the holy site, he cannot understand why Jews should
be any different. Foreign Minister Shimon Peres came out against the idea,
citing security concerns. General Security Service head Avi Dichter,
however, supports Landau's position, according to Jerusalem Mayor Ehud
Olmert. Olmert said last night that Dichter told him a few days ago that
he fears the ramifications of the continued closure of the site to
Jews. The Temple Mount has been closed to Jews for almost half a year,
since the beginning of the Palestinian mini-war.
Minister Landau said, "Wherever you give in to threats, you invite other
threats in other places. My recommendation, therefore, is that it be
opened to Jews. The government will have to either accept or reject my
proposal."
New revelations about the petition submitted to the Supreme Court last week
by the Committee for the Prevention of the Destruction of Temple Mount
Antiquities: The group presented evidence that the Moslem Waqf is
attempting, by its illegal construction there, to turn the entire Temple
Mount compound into one giant mosque. Dr. Shmuel Berkowitz, author of a
thorough study on Jerusalem's holy sites and one of the group's leaders,
accused Shimon Peres of giving his successor in the Prime Minister's
office, Binyamin Netanyahu, false information about an alleged "deal" with
the Waqf. Peres told Netanyahu, according to the suit, that the Waqf had
agreed to allow Israel to open the Hasmonean Tunnels in exchange for
unrestricted Moslem prayer rights in Solomon's Stables. The Palestinians
later denied that any such deal existed. It will be recalled that 16
Israelis were killed by Arabs in the violence that followed the opening of
the Hasmonean Tunnels.
PERES SUPPORTS HOLDING BACK
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres stated this afternoon that Israel would not
hand over any funds to the PA, as it is feared that some of the money would
be used to pay the salaries of Force 17 terrorists. A senior spokesman for
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Raanan Gissin, admits that Israel has a legal
obligation to repay millions of dollars worth of taxes owed to the
Palestinian Authority, but it refuses to subsidize the PA's terrorist
activities. The U.S. continues to urge Israel to release these taxes to
ease the PA's economic difficulties - although it insists on a reduction in
Palestinian violence as well. Sharon rejected the United States position,
saying, "They [the Palestinians] have property worth over a billion dollars
all over the world."
IN BRIEF: HISTORY BOOK, JORDANIAN TRUCKS, ISRAELI GAS, ORR
COMMISSION
Education Minister Limor Livnat has banned the controversial 9th-grade
history textbook, "World of Changes." This was the first time such a ban
was imposed, but Livnat was backed by a decision by the Knesset
Education
Committee of last November which unanimously declared that the book, in
the
words of Committee Chairman Zevulun Orlev (NRP), "did not attain the goal
of fulfilling the country's educational and values goals. It is missing
entire sections on Zionism, Diaspora Jewry, the entire story of Soviet
Jewry, no mention of Ethiopian Jewry's aliyah [immigration], the struggle
with the British before the War of Independence, the background to the
Six-Day War - even the Holocaust was presented in a distorted way." The
book has no picture of David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first Prime Minister, nor
any mention of other Zionist leaders, the Warsaw Ghetto, or the many
terrorist attacks that Israel suffered over the years...
Israel has banned Jordanian trucks from entering the country, for reasons
of security. Goods from Jordan will now be transferred to Israeli vehicles
at the Sha'ar HaYarden [Jordan River Gate] crossing. Trade between Israel
and Jordan rose by 80 percent in 2000 to $75 million...
The Orr Commission, investigating the deaths of 13 Israeli-Arabs during
Arab rioting and clashes with the police, heard testimony of a different
sort today: from radio journalists covering the riots. At least one of
them, Army Radio's Hadas Shteif, described herself as a "leftist," and said
that she felt "betrayed" by the Arab violence she witnessed during the
September riots in Um el-Fahm. Yoel Krakovsky of Voice of Israel recounted
that after the police left the scene, the Arabs began fighting among
themselves. He said that he felt such great fear at the time that he did
not dare to pass that way again for three months, "even though it was my
regular route twice a week=85"
The Israel Electric Company has decided to buy half of its gas supply for
the coming years from the Israeli consortium Yam Tetis. The decision
complements an earlier decision to purchase the other half from the
Egyptian-Israeli partnership EGM. Gideon Tadmor, Director-General of Delek
Energy, one of the beneficiaries of yesterday's decision, expressed his
satisfaction, but said that Israeli suppliers could have supplied all of
the Electric Company's gas needs. He admitted, however, that he and the
other Israeli companies had been forced to lower their prices in order to
compete with the Egyptian offer. Electric Company Chairman Eli Landau
said
that in the end, "the winner has turned out to be the Israeli consumer, who
will benefit from cheaper prices..."

TONIGHT'S SUBJECT: Your home is supposed to be private, but what happens
when new technology will allow the police to literally look through the
walls to see what you=92re doing? Technology vs. the right to privacy.
---
In the privacy of your own home. Behind closed doors. A man's home is his
castle (I know it's not P.C., but that is the old expression). All these
are expressions saying essentially the same thing. What you do in your
home is supposed to be private. The Constitution says so. If the police
want to come in, they need a warrant, or you need to let them in. News
crews used to be able to just follow the cops in, just like on the "Cops"
TV show, but then a number of stations were sued for trespassing. Now the
camera crews need to wait on the sidewalk.
But technology may be making a lot of our laws outdated -- or at least our
ideas of privacy. At the last Super Bowl, the authorities set up cameras
to that filmed people as they came in, and then used face recognition
programs to check whether any of the football fans were wanted by the law.
None of those fans knew this was going on. But they were in a public
place, so I don't think anyone at the stadium thought that they were at a
private event.
But in your home, that's a different issue. We all assume that we can walk
around in our underwear and no one will see. What happens within those
walls is our business, and no one else's. But there is such a thing as
thermal imaging. This technology was originally developed for the
military. I've seen it used, and it's amazing. In pitch darkness, you can
see people walking around, and you can see what they're doing. This
technology reads heat, i.e.body heat, rather than light. And as it
advances, it holds the promise of being able to literally look through
walls. There is a case before the Supreme Court where the police used
thermal imaging to see heat signatures in the attic of a house. The owner
was using grow lamps to grow marijuana. The police went in and busted him.
They didn't have a search warrant to use the technology. They didn't need
one. They never went on his property illegally. They didn't need to. Law
enforcement will say that this is a great new tool that makes their jobs
easier, and keeps their officers safe. Others say it's an invasion of
privacy.
I remember those ads on the back of comic books for X-ray glasses. Even as
a kid I knew there was no such thing. Well, maybe I was wrong. This debate
will only get more difficult as the technology advances. It should make
for an interesting debate.

US warns of ''serious ramifications'' over Russian arms sales to Iran
Weekend News Today
Source: AFP
Tue Mar 13,2001 -- The United States on Tuesday stepped up warnings to
Russia over possible arms sales to Iran, saying such transactions could
have "serious ramifications" and damage US-Russian relations. US
President George W. Bush "is concerned about any sales -- in particular of
missiles -- by Russia to Iran, and the US has made those concerns known
through the State Department," presidential spokesman Ari Fleischer added.
At the State Department, spokesman Richard Boucher said Washington
was still not clear about what type of weapons and other sensitive
technology Putin was referring to when he said Russia was prepared to help
Iran with "defensive weapons." But, Boucher told reporters that any Russian
sale to Iran of advanced conventional weapons, missiles or missile
technology would draw a strong US response.
Scientists thought La Nina faded, but...
Weekend News Today

Source: NASA Space Science news
Tue Mar 13,2001 -- Last autumn scientists thought La Ni=F1a had faded, but
recent NASA satellite images reveal La Ni=F1a-like conditions lurking in th
e
Pacific for the third year in a row. Will they linger for a fourth? Some
computer climate models predict La Ni=F1a will vanish in 2001 and that a we
ak
El Ni=F1o could take its place. If a shift from La Ni=F1a to El Ni=F1o happ
ens,
conditions would likely trigger more rainfall in California, where swelling
rivers
will increase the output of hydroelectric dams, providing the state with so
me
much-needed electricity. Over the next few months, scientists plan to
monitor the situation using data from several satellites -- including the N
ASA-
French TOPEX/Poseidon spacecraft -- to see if the La Ni=F1a pattern of Paci
fic
sea surface temperatures remains or departs.
"It's almost like it's a new ball game every year between March and May,"
said John Wallace, professor of atmospheric science at the University of
Washington. "That's when (the Pacific) sort of forgets what it's been doing
and decides what it's going to do next year," If La Ni=F1a wanes, an El Ni
=F1o
could begin in the fall. But if it does, it shouldn't be like the (record-b
reaking)
Super-El Ni=F1o of 1997 and 1998. The next El Ni=F1o is likely to be mild.
"Because we've just had a Super-El Ni=F1o, it's very unlikely that we'd hav
e
another big one this year. They tend to be separated by weaker ones," said
Vernon Kousky, a research meteorologist with the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center.
But, just which of the two scenarios plays out depends, in part, on another
larger-scale fluctuation in the Pacific called the "Pacific Decadal Oscilla
tion"
(PDO). The PDO is a pattern of sea surface temperatures similar to El
Ni=F1o/La Ni=F1a, but different in that it fluctuates over decades instead
of years.
It's also much larger. Some researchers liken it to a swollen version of El
Ni=F1o or La Ni=F1a.
Gamma-Rays from Asteroid Eros
Weekend News Today
Lead: faith
Source: NASA Space Science news
Tue Mar 13,2001 -- Perched on the surface of asteroid 433 Eros, NASA's
NEAR spacecraft is beaming back measurements of gamma-rays leaking
from the space rock's dusty soil. When NASA's Near Earth Asteroid
Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft left for asteroid 433 Eros five years ago,
scientists weren't certain what they would find when the probe arrived. Was
Eros a 30-km fragment from a planet that broke apart long ago? Or perhaps
a jumble of space boulders barely held together by gravity? Was Eros young
or old, tough or fragile ... no one knew for sure.
But now, after a year in orbit and a daring landing on the asteroid itself,
NEAR Shoemaker is beaming back data that could confirm what many
scientists have lately come to believe: Asteroid Eros is not a piece of som
e
long-dead planet or a loose collection of space debris. Instead, it's a rel
ic
from the dawn of our solar system. It might sound like an ivory-tower
question, but knowing the makeup of this asteroid -- both its internal
structure and its chemical composition-- has a practical application.
The solar system is littered with space rocks more or less like Eros, and
many come uncomfortably close to Earth. One day we may need to blow
one apart (or deflect one without blowing it apart) to avoid an unpleasant
collision. Near-Earth asteroids are also potential mining resources as
humans expand into space. In either case, knowing more about them is a
good idea! "We're just hoping to get as much data as we can before the
mission ends."

Peru's famous Inca fortress of Machu Picchu may collapse
Weekend News Today
Lead: faith
Source: Discovery Earth Alert
Tue Mar 13,2001 -- Peru sought on Thursday to calm fears that its world
famous Inca fortress, Machu Picchu, could collapse at any moment, saying
the Andean citadel had survived 500 years of natural phenomena and tourists
should not panic. But, London's New Scientist magazine quoted Japanese
geologists on Wednesday as saying the earth below the hallowed site
perched on a mountain saddle 8,366 feet high in the Peruvian Andes was
shifting and at risk of a major landslide. The INC noted that Machu Picchu
and the nearby city of Cusco both lay on the Tambomachay fault, which
caused earthquakes in 1950 and 1986.
Japanese geologists who have been monitoring the movement beneath the
city said the back slope is moving downward at about 0.4 inches per month.
"This is quite fast, and it's a precursor stage of a rockfall or rock slide
," said
Kyoji Sassa of Kyoto University's Disaster Prevention Research Institute.
"It's not possible to say exactly when the landslide might occur, but that
will
be the focus of the next stage of our research." Sassa and his team believe
the landslide could destroy all of Machu Picchu, which is visited by more
than 1,000 tourists a day. Rockfalls have already damaged some structures.
Machu Picchu was abandoned at the time of the 16th-century Spanish
conquest. In 1911, U.S. archaeologist Hiram Bingham rediscovered the
ruins, which historians regard as an important religious center for the Inc
a
empire.

Sunday's eruption still measured about 40 miles (65 km) across. According
to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, the eruptions lasted for approximately 3
hours. The scientists described eruptions at the volcano as having short-li

explosive bursts of ash, which were sometimes accompanied by lava

which
they use like a rasp to break through the skin of warmblooded mammals,
including humans. The lions died after being bitten repeatedly. Shallua sai

noted that the insects typically appear after extreme changes in weather.
Emmanuel Cheusi, principal conservator with Ngorongoro, said in the Arusha

which was followed by heavy rains.
Ngorongoro Crater, home to more than 20,000 large animals, has also
experienced a mysterious dying off of buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, hartebee

samples have been sent to the Netherlands and South Africa for testing.
Shallua said, "The animal life is being threatened and we're working hard t

Tuesday that the meeting between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, his
Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak, and Jordan's King Abdullah II "will be

"The repression, the continued murders and destruction in the Palestinian

other political and economic issues" would be discussed, he said. Powell,
questioned in Congress last Wednesday, infuriated Arabs when he said
President George W. Bush was committed to moving "the embassy to the
capital of Israel, which is Jerusalem."
On Tuesday, Al-Baath, the Syrian ruling party's mouthpiece said Sharon's

Subject: [bprlist] Human cloning project the ultimate male dream?
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 19:40:50 -0500
Human cloning project the ultimate male dream?
Makiko Tatebayashi Yomiuri Shimbun Correspondent
WASHINGTON--"Why are such excellent people as the Japanese opposing
human cloning?" asked Severino Antinori, an Italian doctor specializing in the
treatment of infertility.
Antinori made the remark to me during an international conference on
"Human Therapeutic Cloning" held in Rome on March 9. I attended the
gathering, the first of its kind, representing The Yomiuri Shimbun.
The meeting was sponsored by the Italian doctor and Prof. Panayiotis Zavos
of the University of Kentucky. In January, they announced plans to produce
embryos using cloning technology within two years for the benefit of infertile
couples who are unable to conceive using conventional methods.
Since the successful cloning of a sheep named Dolly was announced in
1997, various groups have proposed plans to clone humans. However,
reporters from around the world flocked to the Rome meeting as it was the
first time both cloning and fertility experts had joined to announce such
plans.
The question Antinori posed for me indicated his discomfort over
announcements made by Education, Science and Technology Minister
Nobutaka Machimura and Takashi Sasagawa, special minister for science
and technology, both of whom had issued statements declaring that no
Japanese should be involved in human cloning projects overseas.
In his lecture, Antinori said fertilization technologies in the past have always
been widely criticized initially before later being accepted.
Antinori found in a survey of patients that 30 percent of couples unable to
conceive due to the father would consider using cloning technology.
Yet for couples unable to conceive due to the mother, 98 percent of those
surveyed by Antinori said they would consider implanting eggs from others in
order to conceive.
Loud voices and boos dominated the meeting as doctors and scientists
criticized the way reporters have covered the cloning issue. Watching the
cool face of Antinori, who ignored questions he did not wish to answer, an
idea occurred to me: "Is human cloning a sort of ultimate dream for men?"
I am not a sexist at all. A few days before attending the meeting, I
interviewed a professor who specializes in animal behavioral science at the
California Institute of Technology. His comments on the behavior of animals
may have affected my way of thinking.
In the animal world, male animals sometimes risk their lives to produce
offspring.
While women can feel their ties with their children through conception, men
have no choice but to believe their partner when she says, "This is your
baby."
Yet in the world of small birds, females take it for granted that they can have
extramarital relationships with other males, so the birds, even if they
cooperate in making a nest, often deliver offspring with genes different from
those of the couple's father.
Until the invention of cloning technology, men with infertile wives were forced
to rely on the eggs of other women, who they may not have felt comfortable
with. Considering this factor, it appears natural that the cloning project has
been proposed by male fertility experts.
Recently, I interviewed Rael, the leader of a U.S.-based religious sect called
the Raelian Movement, who has advocated human cloning. He said
producing cloned humans is just the first step for the sect's project. At the
second stage, it plans to develop the technology to rapidly grow cloned
humans to the age of 15. The ultimate purpose of the project is to allow
people to download their memories and consciousness on their own clones.
He said people currently aged under 50 will become immortal under the
sect's plan.
This kind of revolutionary way of thinking has helped in the development of
scientific knowledge. Considering the human rights of cloned children
however, human cloning should not be put into practice without a number of
safety measures.
I wonder why I oppose such a project. Is it because I am a woman, or
because I am Japanese. It may be just because I learned in my childhood
that humans are mortal.

Foot-and-mouth found in France,
U.S. bans European meat imports
http://morrock.com/
The U.S. took the dramatic step Tuesday of banning meat imports from the European Union, after the highly contagious foot-and-mouth disease was discovered in France.
The report of the French outbreak was the first sign that the disease, which is apparently not communicable to humans, but in animals causes weakness and severe weight losses that are ruinous to the livestock trade, had crossed the English Channel into Europe from Britain. It was the first such infection in France in 20 years.
The European Union immediately ordered France to halt any exports of cattle, sheep or pigs -- the cloven-hoofed animals that are susceptible to what used to be known as "hoof-and-mouth disease."
Officials in Britain had taken extraordinary steps to stop the disease from spreading. News photos showed England's Queen Mother walking across a disinfecting area to kill bacteria on her shoes as she joined other Britons at a horse race. Britain has ordered the mass slaughter of potentially infected herds, with nearly 200,000 animals to be killed altogether.
In France, officials had ordered 20,000 sheep that were imported from Britain in February destroyed, along with 30,000 French sheep that may have had contact with them.
The U.S. order, which was followed by a similar order in Canada, affects a $500 million flow of imported meat, mostly from Italy, Britain and the Netherlands.
The reports from France deeply disturbed other European countries. "This is very bad news," an official of a German meat cooperative group told the Reuters News Service. "With the disease having reached France, it considerably increases the risk of it reaching us."

Subject: [bprlist] Federal Rule: Your Medical Records to Be Shared

Federal Rule: Your Medical Records to Be Shared
NewsMax.com
Tuesday, March 13, 2001
A key part of Hillary Clinton's original health care plan that would have
allowed third parties to collect your private medical data and records may
become federal law in a matter of weeks.
President Bush's new Health and Human Services Secretary, former
Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, is considering whether last-minute
regulation changes made by Bill Clinton should go through.
The new federal rule would allow doctors, hospitals, druggists, HMOs and
insurance companies to pass and share your medical information without
your permission.
But Thompson put the rule changes on hold, partly because they allow
marketers access to private medical records they can use to sell their
products.
The new rules were ordered by then-President Bill Clinton and due to
become effective Feb. 26, but have been delayed until April 14.
The rule changes are supported by powerful special interests in the health
care and insurance industries.
But privacy advocates are worried about a system that will work much like a
credit bureau, but with information far more important than one's financial
status.
The issue has gotten little ink, but consumer advocate and nationally
syndicated columnist Robert Heady has highlighted concerns about the new
federal rule.
The rule was issued by the Clinton administration in December pursuant to
the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Under the Congressional Review Act, before major regulations can take
effect, a federal agency must submit to Congress a report containing a copy
of the rule, the proposed effective date and a concise general statement
about the rule. For the most part, the regulations become effective 60 days
after the later of the date that: (1) Congress receives the agency's report
, or
(2) the rule, if published, appears in the Federal Register if Congress tak
es
no action in that time frame.
The privacy regulation was published in the Federal Register on Dec. 28,
2000. However, because of an error, the regulation was not sent to Congress
until the week of Feb. 12, pushing back the effective date to mid-April.
There are problems with the new rules, however, and Thompson wants time
to study them.
Sharing Your Records With Marketing Firms
Although intended to improve the confidentiality of medical records, the
regulations contain a sleeper provision that allows health care providers t
he
right to use confidential medical information for selling their products th
at
could make such noble intentions into a sick joke.
Under the proposal, doctors can even share the information with a "business
partner" who can conduct marketing on behalf of a provider.
"It's perfectly legal under the rule for someone to knock on your door and
say, 'I've learned from your doctor you have hemorrhoids; would you like to
buy this treatment?' " said Bob Gellman, a medical privacy consultant and
former congressional staffer.
"You can only opt out after you have been marketed to. I've been working on
this issue for 20 years, and it's the worst anti-privacy thing I've seen."
Right now, there are no federal limits on the use of medical information fo
r
marketing purposes, so the new rule will not allow the industry to do
anything it can't do already.
Traditionally, ethical concerns and logistical impracticalities have preven
ted
much marketing from taking place.
In the long-gone days of family doctors, the medical field didn't seem so
driven by profits as it is today in the world of HMOs, Gellman said.
Also, he noted, medical records =96 more and more stored electronically =96
weren't so easy to get hold of in the old days.
The marketing loophole is part of the "final privacy rule" that HHS publish
ed
on Dec. 28, 2000.
The regulation is part of the effort to implement the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 =96 a bill that sought to fill t
he gaps
in health coverage that commonly occur when workers get laid off or change
jobs.
An important part of that law requires HHS to develop electronic standards
that all health care providers and insurance companies must use to
communicate with one another about treatment and bills.
The idea is that, if records are stored electronically according to a stand
ard
protocol, a patient can change medical coverage and care easily and
efficiently. In short, HIPAA requires the entire medical industry to enter
the
digital age.
A problem is that electronic storage makes your medical records easily
accessible to many people who you may not want to know that you take anti-
depressants or have a urinary tract infection.
Gellman isn't the only one who's unhappy with the final draft.
On Feb. 23, Thompson said that his department would reopen public
comment on the final rule. Thompson has called for more discussion and
cautioned against too much regulation.
"While I don't pretend to have all the answers, I can tell you one thing,"
Thompson said, "it should not be a top-down, federally mandated solution."
Privacy critics and consumer advocates worry that Americans =96 who were
consumed by the aftermath of the election and the agenda of a new
president =96 may not have noticed that such a serious threat to their priv
acy
is under way.

[IMRA: In 1964, Syria sought to implement a plan to divert the sources of
the Jordan and prevent their waters from reaching Israel. This provoked a
series of border incidents; the Syrian plan was ultimately thwarted by IDF
operations in the spring of 1965. Today Syria, that relies of the supply of

Israel's interest in opposing the unilateral diversion of water by source
countries.]
Israeli security sources are concerned about Lebanese plans to build a
pumping station on the Hatzbani River, one of the headwaters of the Jordan
River.
The work is being carried out on the banks of the Hatzbani near the village
of Rag'ir on the Lebanese side of the border.
Part of the village is in Israeli territory.
Water Commissioner Shimon Tal says the Hatzbani supplies nearly one quarter
of the water flowing into the Kinneret, and warns any program by the
Lebanese to divert the flow would likely have serious consequences for
Israeli water management.
Water for numerous communities in the north of the country comes from the
Hatzbani.
Israel faces a severe water shortage and the Kinneret is posting its lowest
level in years.
Tal made the statements during an interview with Army Radio this morning.

The Israeli Position regarding Negotiations with the Palestinians
Jerusalem, March 13, 2001
Israel Government Press Office
The following policy directives were issued by Israeli Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres after coordination with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon:
1. The Government of Israel is determined in its aspiration to achieve peace
with its Palestinian neighbors.
2. The Government of Israel has placed at the top of its priorities the
primary goal of restoring security and calm, in order to ensure the
well-being of the citizens of the State of Israel.
3. The Government of Israel takes the position that the conduct of peace
negotiations calls for tranquillity.
4. The Government of Israel is seeking to stabilize the situation in the
territories, and to improve conditions for those living there. Such
improvements will be implemented in a way that will not impact upon
security. The Government of Israel has no desire to burden the Palestinian
civilian population not involved in terrorism and violence. If calm prevails
in particular areas, the necessary improvements can be implemented there
immediately.
5. The steps taken by Israel in recent days in the area of Ramallah do not
constitute a change in existing Israeli policy. These steps were meant to
provide a specific security response to a grave security alert. This is
demonstrated by the fact that the Prime Minister and Defense Minister
decided last night (12 March) to lift the closure which had been placed on
the West Bank towns of Tulkarm, Kalkiliya, Bethlehem and Hebron.

CITY LAW SCHOOL HONORING BARRED BUBBA
Wednesday,March 14,2001
By CARL CAMPANILE
Bill Clinton, who has been barred from practicing law, is getting an award
from a prestigious city law school - and some students are up in arms.
Two student groups at Benjamin Cardozo Law School at Yeshiva University
will on Monday give their "Advocate for Peace" award to the ex-president,
who agreed to surrender his Arkansas law license for five years and pay a
$25,000 fine in a deal with the independent counsel.
"I'm offended. It's embarrassing. It doesn't reflect well on our school, the
administration or the student groups . . . bestowing the award on him," said
student Marc Stein.
"We're honoring a man who has no respect for the law, a man who admitted
to misleading a federal court, if not perjuring himself. The guy has to give up
his law practice as a result of the special counsel's investigation - and we're
giving him an award."
Joseph Bonventre argued that Clinton is a bad example for prospective
lawyers.
"It's wrong. It's hypocritical," he said.
Seth Alhadeff said he was perplexed as to why Clinton is getting a peace
award, considering that Mideast peace talks blew up, and tensions and
violence in the region are the worst in years.
"It's irresponsible to bring someone with Clinton's character to the law
school. He was disbarred, impeached, and he wanted to win the Nobel
[Peace] Prize," Alhadeff said.
"I don't see him as a role model as a leader, lawyer or a peacemaker. In the
international realm, he didn't accomplish anything."
But many students enthusiastically welcome Clinton.
"I think Clinton was beneficial for the Middle East. He was a great diplomat,"
said Mattias Eng.
"The award is for his overseas effort. You have to separate his personal life
from his professional life."
Student Jodi Tesser said Clinton's visit is a coup for Cardozo.
"He's done great things for the country on the economy and international
issues. His presence at Cardozo reflects favorably on the school."
Rachel Zentz said she's a big Clinton fan, and urged critics to cut him some
slack.
"He's getting a peace prize, not an ethics award. I'm sure he's not the only
attorney who's cheated on his wife," Zentz said.
"I wish Clinton were still president. I think he's sexy."

Young Christians back unmarried sex
YOUNG Christians disagree with their Churches' moral teachings and believe
sex outside wedlock is morally acceptable.
A survey of social attitudes among teenagers of all faiths found that, while
most young Muslims accepted their religion's values, Christians did not. The
findings represent a further blow to the Church of England, which is
struggling to keep younger worshippers.
Eighty-two per cent of young Anglicans reject life-long marriage and believe
divorce is acceptable. Among Roman Catholic teenagers, 85 per cent
dismiss their Church's teaching that sex outside marriage is wrong.
In comparison, 42 per cent of Muslims believe divorce is wrong and 49 per
cent say sex should be confined to marriage. Half the young Roman
Catholics thought abortion was wrong and 31 per cent of Anglicans. Most
Muslims (58 per cent) were against abortion.
The research was conducted by the Rev Prof Leslie Francis, of Bangor
University, and was published yesterday in The Fourth R For the Third
Millennium, a book on religious education. Questionnaires were completed
by 15,000 children, aged between 13 and 15, asking them to state their
religious affiliation and their attitudes to personal, family and social
teachings.
Prof Francis said: "These are highly disturbing findings for Christians. They
demonstrate a significant gap between traditional Church teaching on major
moral issues and the beliefs of the younger generation."

To the List,
I thought I would throw something out to the List and I hope I
am not being inappropriate in doing so. This article on Young Christians and their views about unmarried sex seems to be world wide. I have adult children (in their 30's)
who have been trained in the Scriptures regarding God's Word on this subject, yet they have abandoned or pooh-hooed that teaching. When the next live-in friend appears on the family scene, they feel we are to totally ignore the fact
that they are not married and welcome the new person with
open arms. We do not. This stand of ours has totally broken our family relationships. If someone had told me that
this would happen 35yrs after they were born to us, I would
have said that's impossible, but it is happening. They have
banded together and the parents are on the outs, and I mean
outs! It has been heartbreaking for my husband and I, we love our children very much but we will not give up our Belief's. The first time this happened and perhaps the second, we took a more congenial stand by saying that we did not like it.......but........we didn't come down too hard on them even tho we knew we should have. As the divorces
began happening and new partners began moving in and then moving out, we straightened up our backbones and made a stand. Very costly to us personally, but then Jesus
said this would happen in life. I wonder, are there others on
the list who have experienced this and would care to share
their views on it and how they are handling the situation? May God Bless each and every one of you - Sunday

Wow This is an open book isnt it?I have one grandaughter who is living with
a guy my sons girl . Another one has just moved out and did the same and
I am picking up the pieces.. My Daughter is devastated and she never once
can figure out how this happened. LIke yours, this girl was brought up in
church and this is sooooo heartbreaking.. WE would have never thought this
would happen.. Lives are in the balance now.
The other grandau ,her mom would never acknowledge God in any way and my son
never made any stand so this does not surprise me . It does not hurt as much
as the one brought up in the ways of the LOrd. They are both in sin and
need a lot of prayer.. I wish I had the answer . The one who was raised
christian is a waitress at REd LObster and she says the church is full of
hypocrites they come in and order drinks and are rude and do not even appear
as christians . She hates to work on Sundays as the church people are the
worse she says. What bothers her is one guy a worship leader comes in and
gets drinks and acts like a arrogant ? Yet he gets up Sundays in front of
the church and acts holier than thou . What do we do we cannot police our
own? .
I think the fact that our people don't act like christians hurt the churches
a lot. God has to clean up the people somehow and that is almost
impossible today. I remember my uncle used to tell me" in life remember
everything painted Red" ain't "a fire truck" . I know everything that says
it is a christian "ain't". I can accept this but the younger ones want
things to be black or white and they want it to be now , they are looking
for "something" to be clean and perfect and HOLY but we lack in the
churches to give them something to look up to.
As a mother of 5 this did not happen to me but it has happened to my
children and it affects the whole family . I have 12 grandchildren and if
the LOrd doesnt return soon , I don't know how we can survive .Or how the
churches can survive. The younger generations are out of control.. God help
us....

Just to let you know that the demonic is raging against all Christian
families, and the focus is on the youth. The cultures so steeped in defilement
from every avenue that I have found that only a firm stand will bring light
to the warfare. This means no compromise with the word or your walk
or the values you maintain in your home.
Do not be complacent, have a battle plan as if today was your last day on
the planet.Speak to the Lord daily about your strategy,it will involve
prayer and the word in your spirit...it may be a time to fast,go into your
cave with the Lord or the divine appointments may arise and you will need
the full armor on to bring forth words of clarity and restoration.
Know that you are not alone...and seek out others who are serious about
the battle to join you in fasting and praying a hedge of protection around
our loved ones and to break the spiritual strong holds that have derailed
them.We need to not forget who we are and start to Trust our Awesome
God...but again change does not come by apathy or inaction...it is a
spiritual battle for sure, let the warrior awaken, take up your armor and
begin the battle today.

How many demons are we letting into our own consciousness by judging others?
We are not God, we are simply caretakers of children until they are old
enough to make their own choices. Even Jesus suggested wiping the dust from
our feet if others don't accept his teachings. That dust I take to be the
stuff that weighs us down and distracts us from the soul work we need to be
doing for our own salvation. Obviously, the answer is not in our churches.
They are 'managed' by human beings, with frailties just like everyone else.
The Christ tells us to go into the closet. That pretty much tells us to
mind to our own salvation and love the attributes in others that reflect the
sweet amenities of Christ. I take this to mean to bless the attributes
covered in the Beatitudes. These attributes did not include human behavior,
they address spiritual qualities. We may KNOW that some behaviors must
cease before salvation can be achieved, but from our own inner work, we also
know that knowledge and understanding come slowly, sometimes. The 'wink of
an eye' may be many generations on angel time.
I have a wonderful adult son. He is merciful, pure in spirit, is by
profession, and inclination, a peace maker. He is strong on tolerance and
always tries to see the other person's point of view. I may not approve of
some of his lifestyle choices, but they have nothing to do with the essence
and goodness of the son that God created, not me. If Jesus could bless the
whore, who bathed his feet with her hair, who are we to judge the frailties
in others? I'd rather be at the party, frankly, than be a prisoner of my
own, human, limited ego. If I go to 'war' for someone else's transgressions
I'm neglecting the battle within me - to judge others or to heal myself.
Just my two cents worth - of no value to anyone but me, I'm sure. But as I
quell my own demons I find that it's easier to see the good in others. It's
peaceful in this place. blessings, cynthia

True, yet neither are Christians called upon to condone or sympathize with
sinful behavior, particularly in the guise of Christianity.

This is my first attempt at sharing in this group as I am still extremely new to computers.
On the above subject I wonder why so many Christians are surprised by what is taking place.
Young people and young Christians must find it very confusing. Why? Because on the one hand we have "The Church" going down the same road as the world, that is accepting almost anything. You only have to look at the Church's stand if you can call it that on homosexuality to see why young people and young Christians would be confused.
"The Church" now accepts homosexuality yet the Bible The Word of God explicitly condemns it.
"The Church" accepts all kinds of weird and unbiblical practices like Toronto, Brownsville, Pensacola etc. none of these things have ANY Scriptural backing yet the Church throws open her doors to them all. " The Church it seems has nothing to say concerning sex outside marriage in fact you will find many Churches who condone this. Yet Scripture again is absolutely clear that this is a sin. No wonder young people and young Christians are confused. What amazes me is that people continually talk about THEIR Church, OUR Church, when Scripture tells us that it is His Church that is The Lord Jesus Christ's Church. Walking in the world that is being disobedient to God has always and will always result in God's judgement befalling us. A good example of this is found in
Judges Chpt. 6. Gideon says in verse 13 " and Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites". Why has this happened? see verse one And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.
"The Church " must stop walking in the world and return to the Word of God. Only then will we see young people and young Christians being given the true instruction which is needed to live a life honouring and acceptable to a Holy God.
The true Church must rid itself of liberalism and the idea that ALL things are acceptable to God again Scripture tells us that this is untrue. So waken up Church be cleansed by the precious blood of The Lord Jesus Christ. walk not in the ways of the world but in His ways.

Perhaps what we need is not for The Church to get rid of liberalism, but for
the members of the Body of Christ to recognize that there are a whole lot of
people who don't know God in the worldly organism called the Church. The
Church is a great mission field for those who have the stomach.
Yours in Christ,

Hi Sunday
Moral values are becoming less and less observed these days. What has caused
youngsters to incline themselves this way? Has television that projects free
expression of sexual activity done this? or has easy access to sexual
activity across the internet done this? or has rock or rap music with its
sensual suggestions through its lyrics inticed sexual practice done this?
All three have in fact, and which are reducing our next generation of people
to conform more and more to the spirit of ungodliness. The generation that
now controls the administration of society in the world today have many
coming out of the hippy era or the 60's where the experimentation of drug
use, and the acknowledgement of Budhist and Hindu deities was strongly
influenced through the music groups such as "The Beatles" and many rock
groups after them. Could it be said that those coming out from the 60's are
potential agitators to the present immorality in society?
My advise to any parent is to pray that your child is protected by the
present and overbearing evils of today, and also the company of friends they
associate with.

Subject: [bprlist] Palestinian Mufti urges protection of mosque
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 08:44:41 -0500
Palestinian Mufti urges protection of mosque
GAZA (Reuters) - The Palestinians' highest religious authority called on
Tuesday for international protection for al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem,
saying this was a more urgent need than Buddha statues destroyed in
Afghanistan.
The Mufti of Jerusalem Sheikh Ikrima Sabri accused the Israelis of
digging under the mosque compound which he said could destabilise the
mosque, one of Israel's holiest shrines. Israel denies the charge.
The mosque is in territory occupied by Israel since 1967 but is run by
the Waqf Islamic religious council.
Sabri also expressed fears that the mosque may be attacked by Jewish
extremists. It has already seen considerable violence.
In 1969 a disturbed Australian tourist tried to burn the site down, and
in 1985 Israeli authorities accused a Jewish underground group of
plotting to blow up the mosque.
On Easter Sunday in 1982 a Jewish-American gunman opened fire in the
compound, killing one person and igniting weeks of Palestinian unrest in
which four Arabs died.
The compound is also Judaism's holiest place, known by Jews as Temple
Mount and revered as the site of the biblical temples.
"We are calling on all international institutions, Arabs and Muslims to
rush to the rescue of al-Aqsa mosque," Sabri, who is appointed by
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Palestine Liberation Organisation
(PLO), said in telephone interview.
It was not clear whether he planned to make an official appeal for
international help.
The Mufti said he was surprised the world community had not expressed
more concern about the mosque, and referred to international efforts to
protect two Buddha statues eventually destroyed by the ruling Taliban in
Afghanistan because it deemed such statues un-Islamic.
"A priceless Islamic heritage such as al-Aqsa needs more urgent help
than two statues in Afghanistan," Sabri said.
An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Israel had not dug under
the al-Aqsa mosque.
"There is no country in the Middle East that better preserves holy sites
and respects sites that are holy to three religions than Israel," she
said.
"Therefore this is unclear to us. The Mufti may be asking for
international protection but it certainly is not because Israel is
digging under the al-Aqsa mosque."
Israeli archaeologists also say the Waqf has carried out unsupervised
construction of the site which is destroying archaeological remnants,
and that any digs have been outside the compound's walls.
Sabri said the old shrine needed constant renovation and maintenance
which had been undertaken by the Waqf authorities.

By Daniel Sobelman
The lead story in yesterday=92s Al-Hayat, the international Arabic-language
newspaper published in London, reported that the contributing nations of th
e
European Union are stepping up pressure on the Palestinian Authority to end
the Intifada.
They will make any further economic assistance to the PA conditional on an
end to violence, the report said. The European Troika =96 European Union
Special Envoy Miguel Moratinos, Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh and
the EU=92s Commissioner for External Affairs Chris Patten =96 will shortly
meet
with Israeli, Egyptian and Palestinian leaders.
The Al-Hayat correspondent quotes a diplomatic source as saying the EU
representatives will =93encourage both sides to restore quiet so that secur
ity
and economic cooperation between them can be reestablished.=94 The article
noted that the EU and the United States have asked Israel to transfer funds
it
owes to the PA because they fear it will collapse.
The article also noted that the contributing countries would hold a confere
nce
on the weekend. The newspaper added that the countries are demanding
=93greater transparency=94 from the PA in expenditures and tighter supervis
ion
over the outlays of the Palestinian treasury. This comes =93in addition to
other
steps to fight corruption and deficient administration=94 in the PA.
A =93well-informed source=94 told the correspondent that these demands comi
ng
from the EU at a time when the PA is in the midst of a severe economic
crisis are tantamount to =93diplomatic pressure on the PA because of its
refusal to end the Intifada.=94
Arab funds are also held up. The Palestinian ambassador to the Arab
League, Mohammed Subeih, said yesterday the PA had received only $10
million of the billion dollars promised them at the Cairo Arab summit in
October.
=93The mechanism to establish funds is excellent for investment companies
but is unsuitable for a nation at war,=94 Subeih said. =93Arab countries co
mmitted
to transfer $697 million to these funds, but only $260 was deposited in the
Islamic Development Bank, and only $10 million has been transferred to the
PA and the Palestinian NGOs.=94

Assad may be ready to meet Arafat
By Daniel Sobelman
Ha'aretz Correspondent
The Arab Monitoring Committee established after the recent summit of Arab
leaders in Cairo to discuss the situation in the Palestinian Authority,
convened yesterday, and is expected to recommend a $40 million transfer to
the PA to help prop up the Palestinian government. Meanwhile, Syria
indicated that President Bashar Assad may be ready to meet with PA
Chairman Yasser Arafat.
The committee, including the foreign ministers of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan,
Egypt, Tunisia, Bahrain, Morocco and the Palestinian Authority, met to
discuss the upcoming Arab summit on March 27 in Amman. They drew up a
draft proposal for the summit calling for an international court to judge Israeli
"war crimes," and a call for a United Nations investigative committee to look
into the events involving Israel and the Palestinians.
Concerning Syria and Lebanon, the committee will recommend that Arab
leaders express their support of the two Arab countries, in view of the
"threats" by Israel against them. The threats, they will say, are "an attack on
the Arab nation" as well as to the stability of the region.
Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq Shara said yesterday that a summit between
Syrian President Bashar Assad and Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser
Arafat might be held even before the upcoming Amman summit. He added
that such a summit could also be held during the Amman summit, on
condition that the results are favorable to the interests of the Palestinian and
Syrian nations. The Palestinian leader has been trying in recent years to
warm relations with the Syrian leadership, but without success. If Arafat
succeeds in this effort, it will be a notable achievement for him, because it
will be interpreted as the formation of a united Palestinian-Syrian front
against Israel.

Subject: [bprlist] Celebrations and a curfew in Hebron

Celebrations and a curfew in Hebron
By Amos Harel, Amira Hass and Nadav Shragai
Ha'aretz Correspondents
A few hundred settlers in Hebron held a Purim parade in the area under
Israeli control yesterday, while tens of thousands of Palestinian residents in
the same area were placed under curfew. Israeli military sources said that
the curfew was not imposed because of the parade, but rather due to the
shooting incident Saturday, when a resident of Petah Tikva was lightly
wounded by Palestinian gunfire.
Initially, the army said the curfew would remain in place for two weeks, but
this decision is likely to change in light of a dispute over the issue at Central
Command, where there is growing unease about the tight sieges and
closures imposed in recent weeks on the Palestinian population in the
territories.
A few hundred settlers and some supporters from outside Hebron,
participated in the traditional Ad-Lo-Yada Purim parade along Shuhada
Street in the city. Among the crowd were children dressed up as Dr. Baruch
Goldstein, the doctor who massacred some two dozen Muslim worshipers at
the Cave of Patriarchs during Purim in 1994.
Large police and military forces provided security for the parade, which came
under a barrage of stones from Palestinians as it passed through Gross
Square in the city. The soldiers responded by firing rubber bullets at the
stone-throwers. There were no reports of injuries in the incident.
The IDF barred Palestinian journalists from entering the area of Hebron under
Israeli control, to report on the parade. The journalists protested at one of the
crossings into the city, complaining that by preventing them from entering
the Old City of Hebron, the IDF was giving into the demands of the settlers.
But the IDF spokesman said the ban was designed to prevent unnecessary
friction in the area.
MKs Mussi Raz and Yossi Sarid of Meretz condemned the curfew that was
imposed on the Palestinian civilians living in the area. The fact that more
than 10,000 Palestinians were placed under curfew because of a parade of a
few hundred settlers was unacceptable, Raz said, expressing hope that by
next Purim, the settlers would hold their parade within the pre-1967 borders
of Israel.
Sarid also harshly criticized the decision to impose a curfew on the
Palestinian residents of the area, while MK Ophir Pines-Paz (Labor) termed
the settlers' parade "frightening and dangerous."
The spokesman of the Jewish community in Hebron, Noam Arnon, said that
"those who oppose the traditional Purim parade were sworn haters of the
settlement enterprise in the city and as such, their criticism did not deserve
a response."
Meanwhile, the IDF released three residents of the Magen David outpost on
Mount Hebron who were detained Friday on suspicion of shooting and
seriously wounding a Palestinian in the area. The three were released after
the IDF was unable to find evidence linking them to the incident. The man
remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Dear Sharon:
Thank you for introducing us to the Tom Lamb website and his
book.Beyond Protestantism. I find myself in complete agreement with Tom
and am encouraged by the fact that he, too, considers the Bible to be
the literal word of God that is NOT, repeat NOT, to be changed or
altered in any way. I have emailed him to let him know he is not
alone. Praise the Lord!
Thank you, again, and God bless you. Charlie Baker.

MARY IS IMAGE OF TRUE LIBERATION, POPE SAYS
Focuses on Apocalypse in General Audience
VATICAN CITY, MAR. 14, 2001 (Zenit.org).- In a world where the believer
may feel
the weight of lack misunderstanding, or even the violence of persecution, J
ohn
Paul II presented the comfort of a powerful force: the figure of Mary.
Addressing pilgrims who filled Paul VI Hall for the midweek general audienc
e
today, the Pope said: "For the Church, which often feels the weight of hist
ory
and the siege of evil, the Mother of Christ is the luminous emblem of
humanity
redeemed and enveloped in saving grace."
The Bishop of Rome addressed a topic characterized by mystical overtones.
The
book he quoted most often was the Apocalypse. He described the struggle
between
good and evil, represented by the woman who gives birth to a son, and the
raging
dragon bent on destroying them.
Both against the Church, and the Mother, of which she is a figure, "is
unleashed
the monstrous devastating energy of violence, falsehood and injustice," the
Pontiff said.
In the great battle, John Paul II added, "Mary, her Son and the Church
represent
the apparent weakness and littleness of love, truth and justice." Neverthel
ess,
"the final verdict is entrusted to =B4the salvation, strength, the Kingdom
of our
God, and the power of his Christ."
However, like the woman of Apocalypse, John Paul II said that one must
keep in
mind that "in the time of history the Church might be obliged to seek refug
e in
the desert, as ancient Israel did on the way to the promised land."
Yet, "the woman remains in this shelter ... only for a limited period," he
said.
The sacred book itself states, he noted, that the "time of anguish, of
persecution, of trial is not, therefore, indefinite: In the end there will
be
deliverance and it will be the hour of glory."
Thus, the Holy Father was able to affirm that, "Mary, next to her Son, is t
he
most perfect icon of the liberty and deliverance of humanity and the cosmos
."
He added: "Let us fix our gaze, then, on Mary, icon of the pilgrim Church i
n
the
desert of history, but outstretched to the glorious end of the heavenly
Jerusalem where she will shine as the Bride of the Lamb, Christ the Lord."

CARDINAL MCCARRICK TURNS HEADS AT BAR SERMON
Joins in a "Theology on Tap" Session
WASHINGTON, D.C., MAR. 14, 2001 (Zenit.org).- It was Happy Hour at
Lulu=B4s, a
downtown bar. The place was thick with people and cigarette smoke. Beer
mug in
hand, secretary Sheila Johnson was just beginning to sink into the mood.
Then she turned around and saw the silver-haired man in black, with the
cleric=B4s
collar: His Eminence, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. She wasn=B4t the only on
e
to do
a quick double-take, the Associated Press reports.
"You have to go where the people are," Cardinal McCarrick, 70, said over th
e
blare of pop music and bar chatter. "Many of these people are probably
saints.
If I were holier, I might be able to tell you which.=B4=B4
Cardinal McCarrick made a statement about his personal theology Tuesday
night,
becoming one of the first cardinals in recent memory to take part in a
Catholic
outreach program called Theology on Tap, AP said. The 20-year-old program
puts
priests in bars and invites Catholics and non-Catholics alike to relax and
listen to a short sermon.
Few, if any, cardinals have ever spoken at the event, according to the
Archdiocese of Washington.
Some regular patrons, like Johnson, found Cardinal McCarrick=B4s presence
disconcerting. "This is a bar. I=B4m Catholic, but I don=B4t come here for
religion,=B4=B4 she joked.
The cardinal made only a brief stop at Lulu=B4s main bar before heading int
o a
room crowded with about 500 young Catholics, drinking beer and ready to
listen.
A few non-Catholic patrons wandered in to listen as well.
The sermon was riddled with jokes and a few personal revelations.
Apparently,
Cardinal McCarrick was thrown out of high school for disciplinary reasons.
And
when he was about to be given his commission by John Paul II last month in
Rome
he was thinking, "I hope I don=B4t trip.=B4=B4
But the sermon also had its serious moments. "You have to make the effort
to
take control of your life and make sure that you are becoming all that God
wants
you to be, all that you can be,=B4=B4 Cardinal McCarrick said. "It is possi
ble to
rush through all of this and end up
