A burden? Do you not know what a privilege it is for us that you share
your

for
Matthew? Praise God for the internet and the door ways it provides. Just
imagine.... no distance, no culture difference, no anything to keep us
from

We, too, look forward to the day when Matthew is completely well.... but

What I meant was to say Amen to it being a blessing to be able to pray for
Matthew.
It is most definitely not a burden.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

EU plans to issue 'identity number' for every citizen
By Stephen Castle in Brussels and Andrew Grice

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/World/Europe/2001-02/eu050201.shtml

Ambitious plans to help European Union citizens move more freely
between countries during the course of their working lives may
include giving every person an individual "EU social security
number".

A task force to be set up at next month's summit of European leaders
in Stockholm is to study the proposal as part of a drive to sweep
away barriers stopping people from moving easily between member
states.

Resident asks for Bible Ban from library

CHRISTOPHER LLOYD
Staff Writer

http://www.starbanner.com/articles/breaking_news/828.shtml

OCALA =97 Another book has been targeted for removal from the Marion
County Public Library, a tome one critic says is filled with more
vulgarity and sexual material than the children's sex-education book
that recently survived challenge.

Charles Schrader, a Wiccan and retired Marine, filed the request for
reconsideration, claiming the book in question is filled with graphic
descriptions of rape, murder, incest, cannibalism and sodomy.

That's how he describes the Bible.

Schrader, who moved to the Dunnellon area two years ago, filed the
request to remove the Bible this week in response to the recent
criticism of "It's Perfectly Normal," a sex-education book for
children by Robie Harris that some have described as pornographic.

Schrader said he doesn't really think he'll get the Bible off the
shelves and doesn't believe it should be removed. He's just trying to
make a point.

"It's filthy, it has pornography, cannibalism like you wouldn't
believe," he said. "Because it's hidden within the covers of
something called the Holy Bible, who would dare question it at the
risk of their immortal souls?"

He is scheduled on Tuesday to address the Marion County Commission,
which controls the library system. During the debate over "It's
Perfectly Normal," the commission voted to set itself up as the final
arbiter of what books belong in the library, only to back away from
that stance after its attorney said that would constitute illegal
censorship.

Schrader said he intends to compare "It's Perfectly Normal" and the
Bible to "see which is more vulgar." He points to various excerpts
from the Old and New Testaments that describe a father impregnating
his daughters, a man eating his son, virgin sacrifices and torture.

Schrader's effort to ban the Bible is only half-serious. "I admit
there's some facetiousness spread through this," he said.

"I do not have any illusions that they're going to remove this. And
personally, as a civil libertarian and a staunch defender of freedom
of religion, I don't really want them to," he said.

He is hoping to convince commissioners they have no business
regulating the content of library books and to point out the
hypocrisy of taking excerpts from a book out of context to conclude
the entire book is obscene.

The reaction of county commissioners to Schrader's complaint range
from anger to indifference. Steve Henning said Schrader is "mixing
apples and oranges," and Randy Harris said the matter is "simply not
worthy of comment."

"We're compelled to listen. And apart from that, I think that will be
the end of what we'll be doing," Parnell Townley said. "I'll listen
to anyone, but the Bible is sacred to a lot of people, especially me.
With that, it should be in the center of the library."

After receiving Schrader's request on Wednesday, library director
Julie Sieg impaneled a committee of librarians to review the book in
question. Their recommendation is due within 30 days. Sieg holds the
final authority over what materials stay or go.

Two other books that have had complaints filed against them
recently, "One Fat Summer" and "Crying Wind," have already been
through this process. Sieg decided to retain both.

Countywide, the library system carries 30 different versions of the
Bible encompassing 42 individual books plus 11 audio recordings.

A former Marine who served three combat tours in Vietnam and earned a
number of citations, the 63-year-old Schrader has spent the past two
decades combating what he sees as the encroachment of religion on
government. He was active in Georgia before moving to Spruce Creek
Preserve with his wife two years ago.

Last month he disrupted a Citrus County School Board meeting,
reciting a Wiccan prayer during the Christian prayer the board holds
before every public meeting. He has also objected to a group of
Christian athletes using school facilities and fought to allow the
creation of a student club based on sexual orientation.

"My focus is on freedom of religion. That's a freedom that's being
stomped on right regular," Schrader said. "One day this republican
democracy will go away, and we're going to have a theocracy."

Schrader is also a practitioner of Wicca, a nature-based religion
sometimes referred to as witchcraft. Wiccans say their religion does
not incorporate devil worship or black magic, and a central tenet is
that any harm inflicted on others will be returned threefold.
Schrader said he is an active member of a Wicca coven in Homosassa.

Mir's flight path is 'unpredictable'

http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_194954.html?
menu=news.scienceanddiscovery

Scientists in charge of bringing down the Mir space station say
changes in the Earth's atmosphere are making its flight path more
difficult to predict.

The Russian team says the atmosphere is "bulging" in places due to
solar activity.

It means the craft is coming down faster and less evenly than
expected.

But although Mir's altitude is dropping anything between 200 and 650
metres a day, ground controllers are confident they can still do
their job, according to Spaceflight Now.

The Progress M1-5 cargo ship is expected to help give the space
station its final push into the atmosphere in March.

Subject: [bprlist] A New Trick Gives Snoops Easy Access to E-Mail
From: <owner-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2001 07:54:44 -0500

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/02/05/technology/05JAVA.html

A New Trick Gives Snoops Easy Access to E-Mail

          By AMY HARMON

For those still harboring the illusion that e-mail exchanges are
private, a watchdog group has uncovered a new trick that enables
someone to essentially bug an e-mail message so that the spy would be
privy to any comments that a recipient might add as the message is
forwarded to others or sent back and forth.

The maneuver does not take advantage of any security flaw in e-mail
software. It is simply one feature of a fancier and increasingly
common form of e-mail known as HTML mail, which enables users to send
and receive e-mail messages that look and act like a Web page.

With the spying technique, a few lines of a programming language
called JavaScript, often used on Web sites to create pop-up windows
and navigational aids, can be embedded in such a message. This
implant, not visible to the recipient, enables the text to be secretly
returned to its original sender every time it is forwarded to another
recipient, as long as the recipients' e-mail programs are set up to
read JavaScript.

[....]

Invisible tags sometimes called Web bugs are widely used in HTML e-
mail by marketers and others to detect whether an individual has
opened an e-mail message. The Congressional Privacy Caucus has
announced plans to hold hearings to investigate the use of Web bugs
later this month. Mr. Smith said that it was now clear that JavaScript
could be used to create a more powerful Web bug so that not only can
someone find out when a message is read, but also what is being said
about it.

Because many e-mail users continue to hit "reply" during long e-mail
exchanges rather than initiating new messages, the JavaScript code
could enable an individual to eavesdrop on an entire conversation
between business associates about a proposal he or she had e-mailed to
one of them, for example. It could also be used to harvest e-mail
addresses when a message like a joke was forwarded over and over to
groups of people across the Internet.

The widely used e-mail programs that are vulnerable to the exploit
include Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express and Netscape Messenger 6.
America Online users and users of Web-based e-mail programs like
Hotmail would not be affected.

Date sent: Mon, 5 Feb 2001 10:39:07 +0200

Ultra-Orthodox leaders have come out in support of Likud leader Ariel
Sharon, calling on their constituents to go to the polls en masse.
It's another blow for Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who is trailing by 17
to 21 percentage points in the polls ahead of elections on Tuesday.
The decision by the Council of Torah Sages of the United Torah Judaism
party puts another seven percent of the electorate in Sharon's camp.
"There will be an unequivocal backing of the entire public which heeds
the Council...to vote for Ariel Sharon," Moshe Gafni, a United Torah
Judaism parliament member, told Israel Radio. The ultra-Orthodox want
to oust Barak because they see his policies as anti-religious.

A straw poll published today in Israel's biggest newspaper, "Yediot
Ahronot," shows Sharon defeating Barak by a landslide. The poll,
summing up results from a two month period, was conducted in a mobile
voting station that traveled around the country. The results gave
Sharon 58 percent of the vote, compared to 34 percent for Barak. Barak
won in only four of 32 districts, taking the port city of Haifa by 61
percent to Sharon's 37.

Israeli soldiers are voting today across the country. On Mount Hermon,
where heavy snow is falling, the ballots were delivered by snowmobile!
Troops assisting earthquake victims in India voted yesterday. An
election officer will bring the ballot box back to Israel handcuffed
to his arm in time for Tuesday's count.

The Barak camp is not surrendering despite the fact that defeat
appears inevitable. "Anyone who thinks Arik (Sharon) has the election
in the bag should wait and see," cabinet minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer
told Army Radio today. While Israeli Arab leaders have called for a
boycott in protest over the killing of 13 Israeli Arabs at the start
of the Palestinian uprising, Ben Eliezer said there's still a chance
they would set aside their anger and come out and vote. "I am telling
you that among the Arabs there is going to be a turnaround,"
Ben-Eliezer said, adding that the Barak campaign was focusing its
efforts on getting traditional left-wing voters to the polls.
Yesterday, Barak appealed to Israeli Arabs and Russian-speaking voters
via interviews on Russian and Arab television stations. Sharon, who
speaks a little Russian, also gave interviews to Russian television
stations. Immigrants from the former Soviet Union are generally hawks,
and are expected to strongly support Sharon. Both candidates promised
to bring peace: Barak by continuing negotiations; Sharon by first
emphasizing security.

Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction, which has been leading armed attacks
against Israel, says it will escalate the Palestinian uprising after
the election regardless of who wins. "Fatah will pursue its national
struggle against occupation. After the elections, we will intensify
our resistance," said Marwan Barghouti, the leading Fatah official in
Judea and Samaria. "How much worse can Sharon be than Barak?"
Barghouti asked, adding that if Sharon wins, "He will soon discover
that the security of Israel can't be achieved without first ending the
occupation." Fatah and Islamic groups are planning big demonstrations
on election day, "to send Israel a message that the intifada will
continue." They have issued leaflets ordering the closure of all shops
on Tuesday so that as many people as possible can take part in the
protests.

Subject: [bprlist] "The time for attack has come - onward to victory": Barak

"The time for attack has come - onward to victory": Barak
BEERSHEBA, Israel, Feb 4 (AFP) -

Big drums, brass and trumpets, the band of a group of Red Army
veterans starts a military march and Ehud Barak mounted to the
platform amid cheers from the Russian immigrants he came to address
late Sunday in the southern town of Beersheba, 48 hours ahead of
Israeli elections.

"The time for attack has come -- onward to victory all of you with
me," said Ehud Barak, more combative than ever. His words were
immediately translated into Russian.

Applause poured forth, the drums rolled, the veterans choir struck up
with the famous Russian song 'Kalinka'.

All around are faces of solid old men, looking well lived-in, their
chests covered in medals. Some are disabled. It was they who entered
Berlin in 1945 with the Red Army.

It was to them that Barak, the most decorated soldier in the Israeli
army, targetted his speech.

"I spoke yesterday to (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin. He is
following with interest what happens here, because in Israel, he told
me, there are more than a million of our compatriots," the outgoing
prime minister said.

"I told him that, with another million men like you, we would be a
strong state for the next hundred years," said Barak to huge applause
from the mainly elderly five hundred people in the hall.

His message is clear: They must block the path of Ariel Sharon, the
right-wing candidate leading comfortably in the polls.

"What is more, we have the strength to take the decision to pull our
troops out of Lebanon, we will be able to trace a border between us
and the Palestinians, with or without agreement, as it is only when
there is a border, that there is peace," said Barak.

His speech was barely over when he moved into a neighbouring hall a
crowd of Bedouin sheiks from the southern Negev desert, wearing the
traditional Arab headdress, the keffiah, and representatives their
community, which is one of the poorest in the Jewish state.

Around 120,000 Bedouins live in the Negev and 60,000 in the north of
the country.

Barak was met with applause by this mainly young crowd of around 100.

"We the Arabs should join this battle with more determination than
the Jews, because our future runs with it that of our lands," said
Fallal Frinawi, deputy mayor the Bedouin town of Rahat, near
Beersheba.

"With the help of Allah and the Bedouins, you will be victorious
Tuesday," said Abu Yunes, a figure widely respected by the tribes.

From the platform, Barak again expressed his "deep sadness" over the
13 Israeli Arab demonstrators shot by Israeli police last October,
during a rally in the north of Israel in support of the Palestinian
intifada.

"We are open a new page in our relations this evening. The same blood
runs in our veins. Power must not fall into the hands of a government
of extremists. Onward, all with me, for victory," Barak urged.

Hi Diana,

First of all, forgive me for this late response. I meant to comment earlier, but
then lost your message in the heap of all the other ones in my mail folder and it
slipped my mind. <g> Sorry 'bout that.

> Ivan Panin who researched the numerical perfection of the scriptures
> (the numerical perfection of God) proves conclusively that the
> disputed verses were included in Mark and that without them, God's
> numerical perfection is broken.

Well, I didn't mean to imply that the ending of Mark (16: 9-20) should not be
included in the Scriptures, regardless whether I agree or not with any
"numerical perfection" that may be found in them as a whole. My point was to
look at what possibly Mark's intent may have been *if* it's likely that he
ended his book with the words found at 16:8. Verses 9-20 are included in our
Scriptures and I take it on faith that God meant for them to be included,
whether Mark wrote them or someone else. Having said that however, I
personally lean towards the theory that Mark intentionally ended his remarks
at verse 8 and thus the abrupt ending was very much in his style. Personally, I
was looking at what I thought Mark wrote. In other words, the ending could
have been added on by someone else. Much like some of the books of the
Torah were edited after Moses' death (Moses couldn't write about his own
death for example). Scholars can pick out where editing has occurred in some
cases based on different styles of writing. I was merely looking at Mark's style
and came to the conclusion that the abrupt ending of the story was very much
a "Mark" thing to do.

Thanks for your original message Diana and the chance to discuss this further.

PLO PUSHES FOR STATEHOOD AFTER ISRAELI ELECTIONS
The PLO is pressing chairman Yasser Arafat to convene the
organization's central committee to announce a Palestinian state
after elections in Israel. PLO officials have urged Arafat to launch
the effort after the Israeli elections on Tuesday. Palestinian
sources said Arafat has been told that the expected election of Likud
challenger Ariel Sharon will result in international support for
unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state. Palestinian sources
said Arafat is preparing to intensify the conflict with Israel after
Tuesday's election.

that he was "a little worried" by proposals for a 60,000-strong
European Rapid Reaction Force by 2003. He said: "Actions that could
reduce Nato's effectiveness by confusing duplication or perturbing
the transatlantic link would not be positive."

U.S. 'STUDYING' ISRAEL EMBASSY MOVE
The Bush administration is reconsidering a campaign pledge to begin
moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. "We are
studying it," Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday on ABC's
This Week program. "At this time of considerable level of violence in
the region, we will continue to examine when that process will
begin." http://www.usatoday.com/news/washdc/2001-02-04-israel-

U.S. PATRIOTS ARRIVE IN ISRAEL AMID SEVERE TENSION
A U.S. Army brigade carrying Patriot anti-aircraft missiles has
arrived in Israel as both Israeli and Arab military sources report
heightened regional tension that threatens to erupt into war. The
sources report both Israeli, Iraqi and Lebanese military movement
over the weekend. The Lebanese movement comprises deployment by the
Hizbullah movement of short-range rockets near the Israeli border.
The U.S. brigade from the 69th Air Defense Artillery is said to have
arrived in Haifa and is preparing for the exercise, called Juniper
Cobra. The exercise will begin on Thursday and will last 14 days.

BATTLE OVER FREE PRESS INTENSIFIES IN RUSSIA
The vicious fight going on here over the press summons up the words
of the legendary American journalist A. J. Liebling: Freedom of the
press is guaranteed only to those who own one. This axiom helps
explain why an investigation by Russia's chief prosecutor into the
Media-MOST business empire controlled by Vladimir A. Gusinsky, one of
Russia's wealthy oligarchs, has taken on doomsday proportions as far
as press advocates are concerned.

BSE-CONTAMINATED FEED SAID TO REACH 70 COUNTRIES
Animal feed protein contaminated with bovine spongiform
encephalopathy (also known as BSE or mad cow disease) is estimated to
have reached 70 countries through exports by a British company, press
accounts reported Sunday. London's Sunday Times said the protein,
extracted from meat and bones, was exported despite a ban on its use
in cattle and sheep feed as far back as 1988, when government
scientists first identified it as the likely cause of BSE.

BIBLICAL THEME PARK IN FLORIDA BEGETS ILL WILL
In a city that has a theme park to satisfy just about every taste,
the latest addition can truly be called an original, or a sin,
depending upon whom you ask. Beginning Monday, tourists interested in
Bible stories instead of cartoon fantasy can bypass the park with
Mickey and go to one with Jesus. The Holy Land Experience, a $16
million, 15-acre park just down the road from Universal Studios, is
billed as "a living biblical museum." There are no rides and no
cotton candy, but the park has already created some fireworks.

CHRISTIAN 'DECLINE' IN NORTH NIGERIA
The Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, has said Christianity has
been in decline in Nigeria's northern state of Zamfara since the
adoption of Islamic law. Archbishop Carey told the BBC that many
Christians in the state had left in despair because they were unable
to build churches or teach religion in schools.

Minister Ben-Ami offers police chief's head to Israeli Arabs on eve of
elections

Dr. Aaron Lerner 5 February 2001

Army Radio reported today that Internal Security Minister Shlomo
Ben-Ami last week asked Shlomo Aharonishky, the head of the police,
to relieve Northern Region police chief commander Alik Ron of his
duties.

Israeli Arabs are incensed at Ron for allegedly using excessive force
against rioting Israeli Arabs.

Critics of the Israel Police response note that the underbudgetted
police were seriously underequipped and understaffed. For some reason,
the failure of Minister Ben Ami to get the budget has been
overlooked in most reviews.

Subject: RICH WAS SPY FOR ISRAEL

RICH WAS SPY FOR ISRAEL
Niles Lathem - The New York Post - February 5,2001

Billionaire Marc Rich lived a double life during his 20 years as a
fugitive, funneling secret data to Israeli and other intelligence
services about some unsavory governments.

Sensational details about Rich's ultimate high-wire act as a spy for
Israel and other countries were provided to The Post as congressional
committees prepare to hold hearings into former President Bill
Clinton's controversial decision to pardon the fugitive commodities
trader.

Among the issues that will be explored by the House Oversight
Committee in its probe of the hotly disputed Rich pardon, according to
congressional sources, are:

 * Rich's lengthy relationship with the Israeli Mossad.

* His numerous contacts with federal prosecutors in New York, during
which his lawyers offered to provide intelligence to the CIA in return
for leniency.

A CIA spokesman denied any relationship with Rich and said no one from
the agency participated in behind-the-scenes White House discussions
about his pardon.

But Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak repeatedly cited Rich's
contributions to Israel's "national security" in phone calls to
President Clinton last month in which he lobbied for Rich's pardon,
according to Barak spokesman Gadi Baltiansky.

And a letter from former Mossad chief Shabtai Shavit to Clinton
confirming that Rich provided "assistance" to the Israeli spy agency
that produced results "beyond the expected" was among the documents
released last week by Rich's lawyer Jack Quinn to support the Rich
pardon.

"The government of Israel considered Rich a critical ally, and the
president took that seriously when he considered the pardon request,"
former White House spokesman Jake Siewert told The Post.

Rich and partner Pincus Green fled the country in 1983 ahead of
federal charges that they ripped off taxpayers for $48 million. Both
were among the 140 people pardoned or given clemency on Clinton's last
day in office.

A storm of controversy has erupted over the unusual way the Rich
pardon was handled, as well as over the involvement of Rich's ex-wife,
Denise Rich, who raised $1 million for the Democratic party and gave
the Clintons $7,000 in furniture for their new homes.

Accounts of Rich's life on the lam - provided by former prosecutors,
Rich's lawyers and the Israeli government - sound like a plot from a
James Bond movie as the ruthless and nimble Rich extended his empire
on five continents and built up a business worth almost $30 billion.

He sold Iranian oil to Israel and Nigerian oil to South Africa.

He brokered the sale of North Korean arms to Iran and did several
deals involving gold, grain, nickel and tin with the Russian Mafia and
henchmen of the former Soviet Union.

And it's now clear that Rich also dealt in the most valuable commodity
of all - information. He used what one of his former lawyers called a
"mammoth information-gathering operation" to gain entree to
governments and to support his businesses.

"He was one of the biggest commodities traders in the world and had
offices and active operations in all sorts of countries. He had
friends in all sorts of places - high and low - and he certainly was
in a position to provide sensitive information from a number of
places," said Martin Auerbach, one of two former assistant U.S.
attorneys who prosecuted Rich and tracked him throughout the years.

Lawyers close to the case say there is no doubt that Rich had contacts
with spies and security services throughout Europe and the Middle
East. Those contacts not only helped him make money but may have also
helped him stay one step ahead of U.S. lawmen trying to capture him,
lawyers say.

Former New York Police Commissioner Howard Safir said he tried several
times to trap Rich and bring him back to the United States, when he
headed the U.S. Marshals Service, but Rich constantly eluded the
federal dragnet.

Shavit, who headed the Mossad from 1989 to 1996, provided a
fascinating glimpse of Rich's role in the murky netherworld of spies.
In his letter to Clinton released by Quinn's office, Shavit said that
he had a long relationship with Rich.

"We requested his assistance in looking for MIAs and his help in the
rescue and evacuation of Jews from enemy countries," Shavit wrote.

"Mr. Rich always agreed and used his extensive network of contacts in
these countries to produce results that sometimes were beyond the
expected."

Murkier still were Rich's efforts to become a superspy for the CIA.

During his intrigue-filled exile, Rich's lawyers made numerous
approaches to government prosecutors, offering intelligence to the CIA
about the terrorists and rogue governments he dealt with in return for
being allowed to return to the United States without being subjected
to a jail sentence, Auerbach said.

"Whether or not he provided the information, it never rose to a level
where it justified any sort of leniency," Auerbach said.

Asked whether security and intelligence considerations involving the
United States played any role in the Rich pardon, a former Clinton
aide said, "I simply don't know."

Justice4JP Note:
In a recent essay ( 02/01/01), NY Times columnist William Safire,
summed it up the most succinctly, "...Rich's direction of some
ill-gotten gains to charities induced Israel's Ehud Barak to use up
his one big pardon favor with Clinton, dooming the unrich Jonathan
Pollard to a life in jail."

Earth faces 38 close asteroid encounters: Russian scientists

Russian scientists warned Sunday that 38 asteroids will hurtle
Earthwards in 2001, some passing the planet as near, or as far as,
1.84 million kilometres away.

But they scotched fears of planetary debris causing earthquakes,
tidal waves and other global catastrophes, saying close encounters of
the asteroid kind were not a reason for panic.

The now identified flying objects would hurtle past Earth at a
distance of less than 30 million kilometres, the Moscow-based
International Centre for the Study of Small Planets said.

The asteroid known as "PH5" would come the closest, flying past the
planet on July 25, only 1.84 million kilometres away, Professor
Mikhail Smirnov of Russia's Institute of Astronomy was quoted as
saying.

Asteroid "WT24" will be only 1.86 million kilometres away when it
passes the Earth on December 16.

However, the proximity of the asteroids posed no threat to
Earthlings, Smirnov said.

Asteroids can be as large as one kilometre across, but most are tiny
rotational bodies that revolve around the Sun in orbits mostly
between the planets Mars and Jupiter.

"They can in no way cause any change to Earth's orbit. Nor can they
cause tidal surges or ebbings or any other undesirable consequences.
Neither the Earth itself nor the people on it will feel anything,"
Smirnov added.

The Moon revolves around the Earth at a distance of about 400,000
kilometres, or four times nearer than even PH5 will pass by.

The flight paths of all asteroids expected near Earth's orbit between
now and 2176 have been mapped, and none of them foresee a collision
with the Earth, though longer-term forecasting is not possible
without more powerful computers, Smirnov said.

He added that intermittent rumours an asteroid was going to collide
with the planet were "fiction or a sign of incompetence."

"If a real asteroid threat does appear in the future, humankind will
undoubtedly find a way to prevent it," he concluded.

Another thought about the signs that are springing up all around
us. Praise the Lord!
    God Bless you. Charlie Baker.

A SIGN OF THE TIMES?

News Report from the BPR, Feb.5/01:

"INDONESIAN CHRISTIANS FORCED INTO ISLAMIC FAITH"

---The religious strife in the Spice Islands has extended to the violent
conversion of local Christians, followed by involuntary and
un-anaesthetized circumcisions. Thomas Rusin, a Roman Catholic
villager, was given his new name - Hasim - at gunpoint by a mob in a
mosque. He, his family and his friends were told that if they did not
convert to Islam they would die. They had already heard that two
Protestant teachers from another village who had refused had been
slaughtered. They had no choice. They were made to repeat three times
the declaration that is the simple entry to the Muslim faith.---

(The Protestant teachers made a choice and I think they are now in
paradise.)

It appears that, following the catching up, there will be thousands who
will realize what has happened and will realize that God did raise Him
from the dead, in addition to believing He is the Son of God. Rev. 6:9
tells us - "And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar
the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the
testimony which they held:". this, I think, happens at the mid-point of
the 7 years and it seems obvious, to me, the ‘souls under the altar´ are
all believers who have been slain in the first 3 ½ years.

However, it is not until the mid-point of the 7 years that Satan will
enter the beast, following which the decrees will be issued tp take the
mark of the beast, to worship him and to bow down to his image. Is it
possible it will be the ‘nation of Islam´ that will be the main ‘slayer´
during the first half of the 7 years? Then, when the decree is issued,
to worship the beast, many of them will realize they, too, have been
wrong, will turn to the Lord and will be slain during the second half.
The first group would consist of present day atheists; ‘Christians´ who
believe in God but not Jesus Christ; ‘Christians´ who do not, today,
believe in their heart that God raised Jesus Christ from the dead, as
well as many Jews. The second group would consist of more of the same
plus ‘converts´ from other religions, including Moslems, who have not,
until the mid-point of the 7 years, accepted either the true God nor
Jesus Christ as the Son of God - all who refuse to take the mark of the
beast, worship him or bow down to his image. Just a thought!

1. PALESTINIAN VIOLENCE IN YESHA
Palestinian terrorists shot this morning at a bus and the IDF patrol
jeep that accompanied it, near Shavei Shomron. No one was hurt, and
IDF soldiers pursued the attackers. Arabs opened fire at the towns of
Psagot and Efrat last night; no one was hurt. Today, Palestinian
terrorists opened fire towards an IDF outpost in Rafiach near the
Israeli-Egyptian border, and at another outpost near N'vei Dekalim in
Gaza. No one was hurt, and IDF soldiers returned fire. Later today,
Palestinian terrorism struck the northern Shomron town of Ganim; one
house was hit by gunfire, but no one was hurt.

A group of several dozen Beit El residents held a protest this
afternoon near the Ayosh junction north of Ramallah. They attempted to
block the road on which one of their friends was shot at yesterday
morning; he miraculously escaped death when the bullets penetrated the
hood of his car and the windshield on the passenger side. Police
arrested three of the demonstrators - not for stoning Arab motorists,
as reported by some media, but for their attempts to block the road
and, in one case, for demanding that a police officer give his name.

The Jewish neighborhood of Avraham Avinu in Hevron came under
Palestinian attack this afternoon - and residents claim that the IDF
reaction was slow and ineffective. One or more Arab snipers shot at
groups of Jews in the area several times this afternoon; miraculously,
no one was hit. Soldiers returned fire only after the second attack,
but as of 5 PM, they had not managed to silence the firing. Hevron
residents say that the IDF knows the buildings from where the firing
originated; they call yet again upon the army to destroy them.

When IDF forces shot and killed a would-be Palestinian terrorist
infiltrator on Saturday night, they did not realize the extent of the
catastrophe that had been averted. On his dead body was found a
ten-kilogram pack of explosives, and he had planned to carry out a
massive attack in central Israel. The terrorist was apparently a
member of the Islamic Jihad.

2. BARAK EXPLAINS HIS ZIG-ZAGS
Despite Prime Minister Barak's prediction that the gaps in the polls
between himself and Ariel Sharon would begin to narrow in the days
preceding the election, surveys released today and last night still
show a 20% margin of victory for the Likud candidate. Barak has not
given up, however, and his supporters flooded 120 main intersections
today with campaign literature. Shlomit Amichai, Director-General of
the Education Ministry, called upon school principals not to allow
students to take part in electioneering today.

The Prime Minister has come out with yet another apology - this time
for what has become known as his policy of zig-zagging. In a campaign
letter delivered to hundreds of thousands of citizens throughout the
country, Barak writes, "I knew that I was entering a field strewn with
mines, through which I would sometimes have to zig-zag in order to
pass safely through=85" Senior Labor party figures have criticized the
letter: "Barak's apology to the Arabs was acceptable, but it was not
necessary for him to admit to having zig-zagged," one source told
Ma'ariv today. Barak's announcement that he does not plan to step
down from the Labor party leadership even if he loses the election was
also not warmly received in the party.

Barak continues to work hard for the Arab vote, but Arab MKs Bishara
and Tibi said again today that the Israeli-Arab population would make
its voice heard by abstaining in the election. The Prime Minister
verbally attacked Sharon and his alliance with the religious parties
today, as evidenced by the hareidi endorsement of Sharon's candidacy
this week. The Likud, for its part, is concerned that the large gaps
shown by the polls in favor of its candidate may lead to a low turnout
among his supporters.

3. RABBI ELYASHIV: TOMORROW'S ELECTION IS CRITICAL
Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, one of the top leading Rabbinical
authorities of the hareidi community, feels that voting in tomorrow's
election is "even more important than in the last elections." He
himself, as well as other leading hareidi rabbis, plans to depart from
his normal routine and vote in the election, explaining that there is
a danger of "an attempt to uproot Judaism if Barak wins."

Ariel Sharon is already making efforts to form a national unity
government, and has asked Prof. Yaakov Ne'eman to begin the work.
Ne'eman served as first as Justice Minister, then as Finance Minister,
under Binyamin Netanyahu. MK Silvan Shalom, one of Sharon's campaign
managers, said that if Sharon's bid to form a unity government with
Labor fails, he would try to form as broad a right-wing government as
possible. MK Benny Elon (National Union), a long-time proponent of a
unity government, said that Sharon will first have to form a narrow
government, and only afterwards will be able to invite Labor to join.

4. BEN-AMI'S BID TO FIRE RON - THWARTED
Police Commissioner Shlomo Aharonishki rejected a request by his boss,
Public Security Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami, to fire Northern Police Chief
Alik Ron. Ron had blamed Israeli-Arab leaders for incitement, and the
firing would have been greeted happily in Israel's Arab community -
and may have increased Arab votes for Ehud Barak in tomorrow's
election to boot. Aharonishki decided a few days ago to reject the
request.

Some 15,000 police officers will be stationed throughout the country
tomorrow, and special precautions will be taken in the north - near
Israeli-Arab centers - where information has been received of possible
disturbances. A general closure has been imposed, as of 4 PM this
afternoon, on the Arab areas of Judea and Samaria. The measure is a
preventive one against security dangers during Election Day.

5. AND THE STRIKE GOES ON=85
Although the national Histadrut Labor Union strike ended last week
with an agreement for a 3.6% wage hike, it is still not clear where
some of the money is going to come from. The municipal councils
demand that the national government pay for it in full; until such an
agreement is attained, the municipal workers say, they are staying
home. No meeting is planned between the sides until Wednesday. Trash
will therefore not be collected and municipal services will not be
offered. Garbage trucks disrupted traffic today on the Gush Dan
(central Israel) highways and in the Be'er Sheva region. School
janitors, however, will be served with back-to-work orders so that
schools will be clean enough for schoolchildren to study hygienically.

6. WEAPONS HEADED FOR THE PA SEIZED BY ISRAEL
Channel 2 Television reported last night that 40 barrels full of
weapons and ammunition headed for the Palestinian Authority in Gaza
were seized by Israel last week. The barrels contained 50
rocket-propelled grenade launchers, 1,000 rockets, and scores of 60mm
mortar rounds. The boat on which the weapons were brought apparently
came from Egypt.

7. THE SEARCH FOR LIFE-SAVING MARROW
The Ezer Mizion (pronounced "MiTzion," meaning Help From Zion)
organization - a non-profit organization in Israel dedicated to
assisting the sick and handicapped - is helping organize a bone-marrow
drive tomorrow throughout Israel. Dozens of leukemia patients in
Israel - most of whom are children - are awaiting a life-saving
matching bone marrow donor, and tomorrow's drive is currently one of
their only hopes.

Although some 30,000 donors have been catalogued in the bone marrow
database in the past year - the database totals almost 60,000 - none
of them have been found to provide a match for the anxious patients.
Ezer Mizion officials say that people who have been tested in previous
drives need not be tested again - but those who haven't yet are
urgently asked to do so. The tests are being held in many, but not
all, Magen David Adom centers throughout the country, as well as in
Ezer Mizion branches and public malls. Would-be donors are not
charged money, but each test costs $65 to process, thus that the
organizers are seeking donors not only of marrow, but also of funds.

8. RAMALLAH LYNCH-LEADERS ON TRIAL
The trial of two Palestinian Authority policemen suspected of
participating in the brutal lynching of two Israelis in a Ramallah
police station last October opened today. Rayaad Mahmoud Jamil Sheik
and Ali Mahmoud Mandan were charged in an Israeli Military Court with
murdering Israeli reservists Yosef Avrahami and Vadim Norzitch.

The lynching happened as follows, according to the charges brought
today: The two victims mistakenly entered Ramallah and were stopped
by the suspects, who took them to the police station. Along the way,
one of the suspects stopped a large group of Arabs participating in a
funeral for a terrorist who had been killed by the IDF the day before.
He told the mourners that if they came to the police station, he
would turn over the two Israeli prisoners to the group. Before he and
his partner turned them over, however, the officers inside the station
savagely assaulted Norzitch and Avrahami with metal pipes. After
several minutes of beating and kicking the Israeli prisoners into
bloody pulps, the police threw the bodies out the second-floor window
into the arms of the frenzied horde gathered below. Atty. Nitsana
Darshan-Leitner, representing the family of one of the victims,
alleges that at least six other PA officers who participated in the
lynching are still wandering free in Palestinian Authority areas.

9. SHEIKH VISITS JEWISH HEVRON
Sheikh Professor Abdul Hadi Palazzi, an outspokenly Zionist Muslim
clergyman, was a guest of the Jewish Community of Hebron yesterday.
Sheikh Palazzi, the former Imam of Rome, is the Secretary-General of
the Italian Muslim Association and the Muslim Co-Chairman of the
Islam-Israel Fellowship of the Root and Branch Association. Escorted
by Root and Branch Director Aryeh Gallin, the Sheikh spoke with Hevron
residents and leaders, and visited Tel Rumeida, other Jewish
neighborhoods, and both the Israeli and Arab sides of the Machpela
Cave. Palazzi has often emphasized Jewish rights to Jerusalem and
sovereignty on the Temple Mount.

30,000 massacred in Khomeini's 1998 jail purge

http://www.smh.com.au/news/0102/05/world/world9.html

London: Children as young as 13 were hanged from cranes, six at a time, in a
barbaric two-month purge of Iran's prisons on the direct orders of Ayatollah
Khomeini, according to a new book by his former deputy.

More than 30,000 political prisoners were executed in the 1988 massacre - a
far larger number than previously suspected.

Secret documents smuggled out of Iran reveal that, because of the large
numbers of necks to be broken, prisoners were loaded onto forklift trucks in
groups of six and hanged from cranes in half-hourly intervals.

Gruesome details are contained in The Memoirs of Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali
Montazeri, one of the founders of the Islamic regime. He was once considered
Khomeini's anointed successor, but was deposed for his outspokenness and is
now under house arrest.

Published privately last month after attempts by the regime to suppress it,
the revelations have prompted demands from Iranian exiles for those involved
to be tried for crimes against humanity.

The most damning is Khomeini's fatwa decree calling for all Mujaheddin (as
opponents of the Iranian regime are known) to be killed.

Issued shortly after the end of the Iran-Iraq war in July 1988, the fatwa
reads: "It is decreed that those who are in prisons and remain steadfast in
their support for the [Mujaheddin] are waging war on God and are condemned to
execution."

It goes on to entrust the decision to "death committees" - three-member
panels consisting of an Islamic judge, a representative of the Ministry of
Intelligence, and a state prosecutor.

According to testimony from prison officials, "They would line up prisoners in
a 14-by-five-metre hall in the central office building and then ask simply one
question, 'What is your political affiliation?' Those who said the Mujaheddin
would be hanged from cranes in ... the car park." In two weeks, 8,000 people
were hanged.

TONIGHT'S SUBJECT: The election in Israel. It appears that Ariel Sharon
is headed towards a landslide victory=85what will that mean for the peace
process?

For those of you who signed up for this e-mail at the very beginning,
you'll remember that it seemed like we were covering the Middle East
almost every day. There was violence every day. People were dying every
day. There appeared to be no end in sight. President Clinton was
desperately trying to craft some sort of deal before he left office. This
round of violence began when Ariel Sharon visited the Temple Mount,
infuriating Palestinians. Whichever side of this issue you may be on,
there is no disagreement about what happened after that day. Violence
swept across Israel and the West Bank.

In the intervening days, we spent almost six weeks on the election mess,
and Israel sort of dropped off the front pages and the newscasts. But now
it is election eve. Prime Minister Barak seems headed towards certain
defeat. So if Sharon wins, what will that mean for the peace process? Or
will there even be a peace process? And how will the Palestinians react?
There are still hard feelings about Sharon's role in the invasion of
Lebanon back in the '80s. Will his victory lead to increased violence? Or
will he surprise people? You hear people use the phrase "Only Nixon could
go to China," meaning that only a conservative Republican could have
reopened relations with China. Those using that phrase say that only a
hard-liner could convince Israel to accept a final peace deal. As
newspeople say when we have no idea what's really going to happen=85only
time will tell.

So tonight we'll have a report from Israel, a report from the State
Department on the differences in approach between the Clinton
administration and the new Bush administration, and we'll have an
interview with Dennis Ross, the long-time special envoy to the Middle
East, the man at the center of the peace negotiations for many years.

Astronomers hatch plan to move Earth's orbit from warming sun
February 5, 2001
By Dennis Newman
CNN Headline News writer

http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/space/02/05/earth.move/index.html

(CNN) -- A group of astronomers has come up with a plan they claim
will save life on Earth from an early demise. All it takes, they say,
is moving the planet into a different orbit.

Their deadline is about 3.5 billion years in the future. At that
time, the scientists say, the sun will be 40 percent brighter than it
is today and the Earth will be too hot to sustain life. Even looking
just a billion years down the road, the increased brightness of the
sun would cause a "moist greenhouse" effect which will have a
catastrophic impact on the planet.

But what if the Earth could be moved farther away from the sun before
it gets too hot for human life?

Researchers Don Korycansky of the University of California-Santa
Cruz, Gregory Laughlin of NASA, and Fred Adams of the University of
Michigan say the idea of changing the Earth's orbit is
almost, "alarmingly feasible."

The scientists' theory is outlined in a paper entitled "Astronomical
engineering: A strategy for modifying planetary orbit." The paper has
been accepted for publication in the journal "Astrophysics and Space
Science."

The researchers' theory is a twist on the "gravity-assist" technique
used to send spacecraft to the outer planets. The team says that by
shooting a large object (such as an asteroid about 62 miles across)
past the Earth, the planet could be gradually pulled away from the
Sun. It would take thousands of encounters to make a difference. One
million encounters would move the Earth out 41 million miles, or
about 50 percent farther from the sun than it is today.

But the researchers say that if the technique is repeated an average
of every 6,000 years, the orbit could be increased to keep pace with
the Sun's increasing brightness. The result, they say, would be to
keep the Earth habitable for up to an extra 5 billion years.

The scientists say their plan is not without some drawbacks. In order
for this method to work, the asteroid would have to pass by Earth
within about 10,000 miles. If the asteroid comes too close, it might
break up or conceivably even slam into Earth.

Another possible side effect of shooting such a large object past
Earth, the scientists say, would be to increase the planet's
rotation. The encounters would have to be planned so that while some
would cause the Earth to spin faster, others would slow it down back
to normal rotation speed. It's also possible that the moon would be
thrown from its orbit around the Earth during these fly-bys.

Uncertain future for Israel's faithful
Is Orthodox Judaism losing its bite in nation's political system?

Editor's Note: WorldNetDaily correspondent Anthony C. LoBaido
traveled to Israel while stationed in Cyprus recently. He filed this
update on the role of Orthodox Judaism in Israeli politics.

By Anthony C. LoBaido
=A9 2001 WorldNetDaily.com

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID21624

NOCOSIA, Cyprus -- As Israelis go to the polls today, the future of
Orthodox Judaism in the nation's political system appears unclear at
best.

All governmental systems are produced by and depend upon a religious
worldview. The Holy Roman Empire. The Mayans. The United States and,
of course, the modern state of Israel. Historians like Toynbee and
Gibbons have written that any nation that abandons the religious
vision from which it arose is doomed to the dustbin of history.

The Roman Gen. Constantine established virtually overnight a
new "ruling elite" that Christianized the Roman Empire. After
Constantine, the pagan Emperor Julian took power and tried to re-
paganize Rome, but he died after only a few months in power. And
Cyprus was the first nation in the world to be ruled by a Christian,
when the Apostle Paul converted the Roman governor to Christianity in
the first century A.D.

Writing in "When Nations Die," author J. Nelson Black explains that
the religious worldview of the ruling elite in any particular society
can have a great impact on its influence and very survival as a
nation-state: "Clearly, there was a purpose in history that was
beyond human invention. When the people of Israel were lifted up, it
was to fulfill their prophetic decrees; and when they were brought
down, it was to fulfill another stage of history."

In terms of the modern state of Israel -- caught in another flux when
considering the path today's elections will lead the nation --
Black's thesis paints a gloomy picture on the horizon.

Although founded under the belief in "Zionism" exposed by great
political thinkers such as Theodore Hertzl, Israel's declaration of
Independence refers to "the rock Israel" and not to the God of the
Old Testament. Modern Israel is not technological backwater. Rather,
it is a vibrant high-tech society. In fact, its high-tech industry
produces some of the finest products of its kind on Earth. Israel has
the finest collection of air force pilots on the planet, nuclear
weapons, and leads the world in the field of scientific farming.

Israel is also a nation that has grown comfortable with American-
style political spin-doctoring. For example, Clinton attack dog James
Carville even helped handle Prime Minister Ehud Barak's drive to
become prime minister a few years ago.

Yet today, just as some would say traditionally minded Christians
have been marginalized in American politics, so too have Orthodox
Jews come under fire in Israel's political machinations.

For over 50 years, Israel has had no problems with the issue
of "separation of church and state." But all that may be about to
change. Last September, Barak, who some call the "Tony Blair of
Israel," asked his Labor Party to hold a special session in order to
advance Barak's ideas of a new "social and civil agenda" aimed at
secularizing the state of Israel.

Among Barak's proposals are eliminating the religious identity
statement on national ID cards. (A similar campaign is under way in
Greece.) Barak also wants to rewrite Israel's constitution, allow
Jews to marry non-Jews, terminate the Ministry of Religious Affairs
and enable El Al, the nationalized flagship air carrier, to fly on
the Sabbath.

As more of Israel's citizens continue to drift into secularism and
away from their religious roots, Barak has tried to appease this
growing block of non-Orthodox voters. The divide between believers
and secular citizens in Israel may well tear that nation apart.
Indeed, a recent poll found that almost 85 percent of Israeli
citizens believe the religious-secular issue "threatens the very
existence of the state."

There are approximately 4,300,000 eligible voters in Israel today,
about half of whom support Barak's initiatives. About half a million
of the Jewish state's residents are recent emigrants from Russia.

Six religious parties wield immense power in the Israeli political
process. Critics claim these parties have become corrupt, along with
the secular parties. Orthodox Jews, though not large in numbers, have
played a significant role in shaping the policies of Israel's
governments over the past five decades. In exchange for their support
for Labor Party initiatives, the Orthodox parties received financing
for religious courts, schools and synagogues, not to mention a
plethora of high-level ministerial positions in the Cabinet.

The Israeli victory in the 1967 Six-Day War brought many Israelis
into the more right-leaning factions and Orthodox religious camp.
Believing that God had granted the Jews victory and a mandate to
restore the biblical boundaries of ancient Israel, the hawkish
segment of society rose in prominence. Victory in the 1973 Yom Kippur
War, the 1982 War with Lebanon and attack on Iraq's Osiraq nuclear
bomb-making plant fueled this view among religionists and rightists
in and out of Israel.

Yet traditional Orthodox Judaism -- called "haredim" or "those who
fear God" -- remained focused on studying the Torah while living in
European-style ghettos and sporting black clothes.

Orthodox students were made exempt from military service -- which led
to resentment in the general population, all of whom must serve at
some point in the army. In spite of this, they did manage to take
control of Judaism's holiest shrines and push government
administrations to enforce Old Testament law. When Barak's minister
of education announced he wanted to withhold money from Orthodox
religious schools, a haredim rabbi -- called "haredi" -- publicly put
a curse on the minister.

On the other hand, the neo-Orthodox crowd carried around Galil
machine guns, sent pioneers to the West Bank and in general focused
on territorial expansion. The two streams of Orthodoxy did form a
strong alliance, yet never merged into a monstrous political-cultural
block, limiting its influence in the political spectrum and in the
culture. This alliance, however, did shift the balance of power in
Israel from the left to the right.

High-tech worker Ilsa Christie, a Norwegian from Oslo who has lived
in Israel for 10 years with her Israeli boyfriend, told
WorldNetDaily.com: "I speak Hebrew now and have tried to fit into
this society. But like the black Ethiopian Jews, I will always be
considered an outsider. The power of religion is very strong in this
nation, as it should be. Sometimes this creates problems. Orthodox
Jews are frightened at the moral decline in Israel, as they should
be. But many non-Orthodox Jews are also worried about the moral
direction of our country. We should be working together for the sake
of our children, not fighting at each other's throats. We have enough
external enemies as it is."

Christie said she supports some of Barak's proposals, like "allowing
non-Orthodox Israeli citizens to travel on bus routes on the
Sabbath." She added, "My boyfriend and I might have to fly to Norway
or Cyprus to get married, because I am a Christian, and the Israeli
rabbinate -- which has a monopoly on the marriage issue -- won't
allow us to marry. People who love each other should be together. I
read the Old Testament and study it every day. I believe in the same
God as the Orthodox Jews do. I tell you I know the Old Testament
better than most Israelis that I meet in the course of my day. Some
of them don't even know the basic stories of Noah or Lot or Daniel in
the lion's den."

Christie then added, "Remember, Jesus said, `The Sabbath was made for
man, not man for the Sabbath.' We should follow that theme when it
comes to the bus routes and other minor issues. But the Orthodox
community feels under siege when they see Barak wanting to give away
the Temple Mount to the United Nations. I see this as the fulfillment
of Bible prophecy, but try telling them that."

Asked about how ordinary Israelis view the traditional and de facto
Orthodoxy, Christie said, "It's funny. Most Jews look at their rabbis
as being the kind of devout Jews they themselves don't have the time
to be. The traditional Orthodox Jews are seen as 'real Jews.'" The
new Orthodoxy branch and its followers expanding into the West Bank
are viewed as the real Zionists, the real pioneers and the real
cowboys. The trouble is, the world is shrinking, not expanding, so
unless you start a colony on the Moon, chances are you're going to
run into violent opposition when you try to expand your territory --
especially in the Middle East."

Fundamentalism has reached its peak in Israel and the West, some
would argue, although Islamic and Hindu fundamentalism are
unquestionably growing in power in the Middle East and India. In this
regard, nationalism is not enough. A "civil state" that ignores
racial and religious and cultural heritage is an abomination to
fundamentalists of all religions.

Fundamentalists in general seek a broad "sense of community" ruled by
some sort of "divine" regimen of rules handed down by God. Islamic
fundamentalism has made the prospect of peace with Israel almost
impossible to consider.

"'Kill a Jew and go to paradise' is not exactly a slogan for peace,"
said Christie.

Zionism has Orthodox Jewish, fundamentalist Christian and secular
roots. Fundamentalist Christians in the UK, which controlled
Palestine before the creation of the state of Israel, believed that
Great Britain could fulfill Bible prophecy by creating a homeland for
the Jews.

Finding a new identity for modern Israel will be no easy task. For
the Orthodox Jews, who have high birth rates and relatively low
economic status, they will find themselves increasingly in need of
government assistance from future liberal non-religious Israeli
governments.

As Israeli citizens participate in today's general election, the
central question for the populace is one that has been asked by great
historical figures down through the centuries, from Christ to Abraham
Lincoln: "Can a house divided against itself remain standing?"

State Department: Don't say 'peace process'
By ELI J. LAKE

http://www.vny.com/cf/News/upidetail.cfm?QID=157678

WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- The State Department has instructed its
field officers in the Middle East to stop using the term "peace
process" when referring to the stalled negotiations between
Palestinians and Israelis, according to an internal e-mail obtained
by United Press International.

In one of his first acts since taking office as secretary of state,
Colin Powell has told diplomats in the region to drop the phrase
because "it's hard to recognize a process when we are trying to get a
hold of the violence," according to one State Department official.

An e-mail from the Near East Affairs Bureau sent recently to State
Department officials in the region says, "We no longer are referring
to a 'peace process.' It is 'negotiations for peace' or 'movement
towards peace' or, simply, the 'peace negotiations.' This is because
we are not concerned so much with the process, but the outcome --
peace. Please try to remove 'peace process' from your lexicon, and,
instead, use one of these more accurate phrases, or something equally
imaginative."

The policy marks a shift away from the Clinton administration which
liked the term so much it created a separate office within the State
Department, the Special Middle East Coordinator, to solely promote
the process started in 1993 in Oslo, Norway. Under Powell though,
that office will be abolished and its function -- monitoring and
promoting the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations -- will be subsumed
under the Near East Affairs Bureau.

The move is likely to be seen as part of generalized downgrading of
the importance attached to the region by the administration.
Commenting on the role of Vice President Cheney, Natan Sharansky --
the Israeli politician widely tipped to be the country's next foreign
minister -- recently told UPI "I definitely feel that this
government, and he personally, will be much less interested in being
involved so deeply in the peace process, in decision making."

President Clinton worked tirelessly until the final hours of his time
in office to reach an agreement to end the 52-year conflict in
Israel, despite the violent clashes between both sides since Sept. 28
that have claimed nearly 400 lives, the majority Palestinian. In
January, Clinton offered a plan that would have both sides share
Jerusalem; carve a Palestinian state from the West Bank and Gaza
Strip; and compensate Palestinians living as refugees through an
international fund. But talks foundered on the vexed issue of whether
Palestinians should have the right to return to their homes abandoned
during Israel's war of Independence.

The future of the peace process will depend largely on who Israelis
vote in as the next prime minister in Tuesday's elections. Likud
leader, Ariel Sharon, is a prohibitive favorite in the contest and
has said during his campaign that he would offer Arafat far less than
current Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Speaking last month at the Council
on Foreign Relations, Sharon said he would not offer any sovereignty
of Jerusalem, recognize a Palestinian right of return or compromise
security in the Jordan valley.

Meanwhile, Palestinian activists have vowed to make Tuesday a "day of
rage," in Israel with mass demonstrations.

Powell has said he would wait until the results of Tuesday's prime
minister elections in Israel to develop a strategy for dealing with
the potential crisis there. Monday, State Department spokesman,
Richard Boucher said that it was incumbent on both sides "to remember
that it's a time to maintain calm and to avoid any sort of
provocation."

Subject: [bprlist] Hindus and Muslims alike are begging Mother Earth for forgiveness
From: owner-bpr@philologos.org

Sin was to to blame for quake, say priests

http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/world/2001/0206/wor9.htm

Hindus and Muslims alike are begging Mother Earth for forgiveness,
Rahul Bedi reports from Ahmedabad.

INDIA: Victims of India's earthquake have vowed to lead a life of
piety after local priests declared that the earth, revered as the
Mother Goddess, had roared and erupted under the weight of their
sins.

Over 30,000 people are feared dead and thousands of others were left
homeless when India's worst earthquake in half a century struck
western Gujarat state's Kutch region last month. "Bad deeds are
blacker than mascara, and sins are heavier than the earth," said
Gosai Haripur, a priest from Dhori, one of hundreds of villages and
towns devastated in the January 26th earthquake, which measured 7.9
on the Richter scale. "Why else would mother earth cause so much
havoc," he asked.

Mavji Bijal, a farmer, said thousands of villagers across Kutch had
taken note of the priestly warnings and decided to become more
religious. The men, he declared, had vowed not to quarrel with one
another over land disputes while women had promised to stop harassing
their daughters-in-law, a common problem in India's joint families.

"The belief that the tremors were caused by the earth venting its
rage cuts across religious lines," Vejiben, the Hindu headwoman of
Dhrang village in Kutch, said.

All surviving Muslim and Hindu women in Dhrang and surrounding areas,
she declared, have begun "appeasing" Mother Earth through prayers and
offerings, begging her for mercy as severe aftershocks frequently rip
though the area. Nearly 375 aftershocks, some measuring 4.8 on the
Richter scale, have rocked the area since the initial tremor.

Meanwhile, a middle-aged brother and sister were pulled out alive
from the rubble yesterday after 10 days trapped in their kitchen. The
army had been getting ready to bring in bulldozers to raze the
damaged buildings around them when a patrol spotted someone waving
from a small barred window.

But aid workers were concerned about survivors venturing back into
cracked and weakened buildings. "People are still living in places
where I would not even send my team because they are so dangerous.
Thousands of people are living in such places," said Colin Deiner,
leader of the South African Urban Search and Rescue Team in Bhuj.

"When it's time to die, it's time to die. Death is decreed by God,"
said Mukesh Shah, who has reopened his small grocery store in a
damaged multi-storey building in Bhuj, in a desperate effort to
restore some normality in his existence. "We lost everything in the
earthquake and I would rather be dead than beg on the street," he
added.

The only people to profit from Gujarat's devastating earthquake are
the scrap dealers, who are buying up tons of debris, including iron
girders, broken doors and windows, reinforced steel and other
construction material.

"It's not as if we are hoping to make money from a tragedy, but there
should be a lot of work for us now," said Keshubhai Seth, a scrap
dealer in Ahmedabad, the state's financial capital where over 660
people died after some 50 high rise buildings were damaged and
thousands of cars and motorcycles crushed.

Truckloads of debris are also being dumped daily on a clearing by the
Sabarmati River, which flows through Ahmedabad, where hundreds of rag
pickers were sifting the piles for useful items to sell to scrap
dealers.

Experts say terrorists hiding message on Web
By Jack Kelley, USA TODAY

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washdc/2001-02-05-ejihad.htm

WASHINGTON - Osama bin Laden and other Muslim extremists are posting
encrypted, or scrambled, photographs and messages on popular Web
sites and using them to plan terrorist activities against the United
States and its allies, U.S. officials say. The officials say bin
Laden and his associates are using the Internet to conduct what some
are calling "e-jihad," or holy war.

Bin Laden, a dissident Saudi businessman, has been indicted for the
1998 bombing of two U.S. embassies in East Africa and is believed to
be responsible for last fall's bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen. Four
alleged bin Laden associates went on trial Monday in federal court in
New York on charges relating to the embassy bombings.

"To a greater and greater degree, terrorist groups, including
Hezbollah, Hamas, and bin Laden's al Qaida group, "are using
computerized files, e-mail, and encryption to support their
operations," CIA Director George Tenet wrote last March to the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee. The testimony, at a closed-door hearing,
was later made public.

Through weeks of interviews with U.S. law-enforcement officials and
experts, USA TODAY has learned new details of how extremists hide
maps and photographs of terrorist targets - and post instructions for
terrorist activities - on sports chat rooms, pornographic bulletin
boards and other popular Web sites. Citing security concerns,
officials declined to name the sites. Experts say it's difficult for
law enforcement to intercept the messages.

"It's something the intelligence, law-enforcement and military
communities are really struggling to deal with," says Ben Venzke,
special projects director for iDEFENSE, a cyberintelligence company.

Officials and experts say the Internet is a new form of the "dead
drop," a Cold War-era term for where spies left information.
Officials and experts say the messages are scrambled using free
encryption programs set up by groups that advocate privacy on the
Internet. Those same programs also can hide maps and photographs in
an existing image on selected Web sites. The e-mails and images can
be decrypted only with a "private key" or code.

"The operational details and future targets, in many cases, are
hidden in plain view on the Internet," Venzke says. "Only the members
of the terrorist organizations, knowing the hidden signals, are able
to extract the information."

Officials say bin Laden began using encryption five years ago, but
recently increased its use after U.S. officials revealed they were
tapping his satellite telephone calls in Afghanistan and tracking his
activities.

"We will use whatever tools we can - e-mails, the Internet - to
facilitate jihad against the (Israeli) occupiers and their
supporters," Sheik Ahmed Yassin, the founder of the militant Muslim
group Hamas, said in a recent interview in the Gaza Strip. "We have
the best minds working with us."
